2003 IPA Pro Cup Series

Tycobbian Union South Division - First Round Series - Third Game

San Alejo Advances, Herrera Quells Ninjas 6-3
The TU South top seed, the San Alejo Montaneros, fought off the tough fourth-seeded Ginza Ninjas 6-3 to advance to the Sweet 16 in the IPA playoffs. Skipper Lando Peceda got yeoman's work from his 22-game winner Alberto Herrera to eliminate the pesky Ninjas. Herrera quelled Ginza on three runs and eight hits with eight strikeouts and only one walk. The 29-year-old-southpaw only allowed one earned run. The Montaneros ran up a 6-0 lead off losing pitcher Kojiro Matsumoto, who was erratic and walked seven batters in five innings. San Alejo collected 10 hits in the win, led by RF Marcelino Zuniga with three hits. 1B Rodger Wooten and C Bobby Lafferty scored two runs apiece for the Montaneros. SS Dave Torregrossa paced Ginza with two hits and an RBI.

Typhoons Top Hurricanes 6-3, Takes Series
At Cape Coral's Seaside Stadum, the visiting Turon Typhoons erupted for three runs in the decisive eighth inning to knock the Hurricanes out the playoffs. Turon topped them 6-3 in game three to advance to the Sweet 16 round. RBI triples by LF Joe Wheeler and SS John-Paul Trevenot made it 5-3 with the last run scoring on a squeeze bunt by winning pitcher Scotty Boswell. The Typhoons jumped in front 3-0 after four innings, only to be tied up by the seventh. Cape Coral outhit them 10-6. The defeat went to reliever Bart Thomas, who was creamed in the eighth for three runs on two hits and two walks in only one-third of an inning. Boswell worked seven rough innings for the victory and allowed three runs on eight hits with four walks and six Ks. Mac Yokum saved it for him with two scoreless innings.

Turon will now take on the pennant-winning San Alejo Montaneros in the TU South finals. The best-of-three series gets underway tomorrow afternoon in Turon. The final two games will be played in San Alejo.
