Crusaders Crush Sunbirds 13-6 in First Game
The St. John Crusaders smashed 15 hits and routed Belair Beach 13-6 in the first game of the IPA Sweet 16 series at Bayside Park. St. John pounded them for 10 runs in the first two innings to take an easy win. Sparking the Crusaders were 1B Frankie Faber (.357), who rapped a three-run homer and drove in four runs with 2-for-5, RF Kenny Hatcher (.417) with 2-for-4 and three RBIs, LF Don Kolstad (.500) with 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, including a solo home run, and 2B Tike Farthing (.273), who had a two-run double. 2B George Longmire (.455) scored three times and had a pair of hits for St. John. Belair Beach also had 15 hits. Sunbird 1B Phil Gravelli (.579) led them with 4-5 and four RBIs with a two-run roundtripper in the fifth. Eric Mayes (1-0 7.71) staggered through seven innings for the win, permitting 12 hits and six runs. George Martz blanked Belair Beach over the final two frames. The Crusaders led throughout the game. 4-3 after one inning, 10-5 after two and 11-6 after six. Loser Terry Christian (1-1 9.35) was jarred for eight runs and left in the second inning.
The best-of-three series now shifts to St. John's Cathedral Stadium.
