Tycobbian Union East Division Sweet 16 Series - Game One
Red Sox Nip Blue Jays 2-1 in Sweet 16 Opener
In a well-pitched game Red Bluff nipped Tuckanarra 2-1 in 10 innings at Central Park Stadium to go 1-up in the Sweet 16 series opener. 3B Vern Gable delivered the game-winning single off losing pitcher Anthony Montgomerie (0-1 4.50), scoring RF Lance Austen (.267) from second. Leonard Urban and John Dougherty combined to defeat the Blue Jays on an eight-hitter. Urban (1-0 2.30) walked six in his eight-plus innings, but he held Tuckanarra to six hits and one run with six Ks. Dougherty (1-0 0.00) picked up the decision with one and two-thirds scoreless innings. Red Bluff took the lead 1-0 in the fourth frame on 1B Bucky Frizzell's (.438) base hit and the Blue Jays knotted it up on C Clint Hardesty's (.364) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning. Frizzell and LF Tony Blundell (.375) each had two hits to pace the Red Sox, while Tuckanarra's 3B James Lynam (.545) and RF Monty Draycott (.333) both had two hits.
The TU East series will now move to Red Bluff for the rest of the best-of-three series. The second game is slated for tomorrow afternoon at Red Bluff Park.
