Ruthlandian Union South Division Sweet 16 Series - Game Three
Crusaders Maul Sunbirds 10-2, Take Series
At Cathedral Stadium in St. John, the Crusaders broke open a 3-2 game with three runs in the fifth and went on to maul Belair Beach 10-2 in an RU South Sweet 16 elimination game. Racking up 13 hits, everybody in the line-up got at least one hit except one, paced by CF Jorge Mercado (.222) with 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Mercado homered and tripled. Manager Dickie Billings got an excellent outing from Zach Simon (2-0 1.59), who shackled the Sunbirds on four hits and did not allow an earned run. Simon, 19-17 in the regular season, issued four walks and fanned three batters. Slim Mosley, the tallest player in the IPA at 6'10", had a terrible game as the Crusaders slammed him for six runs and six hits in four-plus innings. Mosley (0-1 3.00) is coming off a great season with a 21-11 mark. In his only postseason start he went seven innings in a no decision and gave up only one unearned run. Belair Beach played lousy defense with four miscues in the game.
St. John will now challenge the Middlefield Roosters in the IPA Elite 8 Series, which will get underway tomorrow at the Roosters home park.
