Ruthlandian Union 2004 Elite 8 Series

SV Rattlers KO V's 6-2, Qualify For Final 4
Final 4 - here we come! That's the message the Sugar Valley Rattlers sent today as they KO'd the Volusia Vigilantes 6-2 to take the Ruthlandian Union Elite 8 Series three games to one. The Rattler righthander Anthony Glaser (3-0 2.14) fired a sharp five innings, giving up only one hit with five Ks in a rain-delayed affair. Glaser got his third postseason win, but needed help to nail the verdict. He exited with a 2-0 lead. Ron Benson (0-0 4.91) struggled in his two-plus frames, allowing two runs, three hits and walking four. Dale Bixler (0-0 0.00) came on in the eighth and effectively retired all four batters he faced for his second playoff save. Sugar Valley jumped on losing pitcher Carl Schmitz (0-3 3.79) for five runs in five innings and were never challenged. The Rattlers only got six hits, but made the most of them. The V's were held to just four hits overall.

Sugar Valley will meet the winner of the Ranford-Valmara series in the RU Final 4.

Valmara In, Ranford Out, Vipers In Final 4
Valmara finished off Ranford 5-1 in game four of the Elite 8 Series at War Memorial Stadium. Vanya Vasylenko (2-0 2.14) eliminated the Bulls on a three-hitter as the Vipers won the series 3 games to 1. Vasylenko struck out five, walked two and went the distance. CF Jan Szymanski (.360) and 1B Masaichi Okawa (.321) were the big guns for Valmara. Szymanski got things rolling with a two-run single in the fourth inning to break up the scoreless game. Okawa rapped a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 4-1. RF Val Krol (.257) batted in the last run in the eighth.

24-game winner Bud Enright (0-3 6.35) was the loser. He was shelled for four runs in four innings, giving up four hits, walking four and fanning four. Enright had a miserable postseason as he lost all three starts.

The Vipers will now go up against the Sugar Valley Rattlers in the RU Final 4. The first two games of the series will be at War Memorial Stadium in Valmara with the remaining games at Farmers Memorial Park in Sugar Valley.
