Ruthlandian Union 2004 Final 4 Series
Final 4 Tied, Sugar Valley Trims Valmara 4-3
After four games the Ruthlandian Union Final 4 is all tied up at two games each. Sugar Valley rallied and won at home 4-3 over Valmara to remain in the running for the IPA Pro Cup. The Rattlers had it tough in the early going against Ted Farentino and trailed 2-0 after five innings. C Yoshi Motsuzuki (.180) knocked in the first run in the third frame. Run number two came in on a walk, single and an infield error. Sugar Valley mounted a comeback in the sixth when SS Flipper Bird (.294) cracked an RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1. In the seventh three successive singles tied the score and got rid of Farentino. Reliever Gerry Wojcik, however, did not fare well. C Slingshot McFall (.250) sent the Rattlers ahead with a sacrifice fly and a single by CF Freddie Vaux (.229) put them two in front.
The Vipers rallied in the ninth and threatened to tie it up. RF Val Krol's (.296) solo homer narrowed the score to 4-3. A single and an error put the tying run on second with two away, but Ron Benson relieved Jay Washington and fanned the final batter to end the game. Manager Gibson Bobkins had used Washington in relief after he started and exited early in yesterday's loss. Washington struggled in his two and two-thirds innings, giving up five hits and a run, but managed to salvage the win with the help of Benson. Valmara outhit the Rattlers 10-8, paced by Krol with three hits. Vaux led Sugar Valley with a pair of base hits. Ted Farentino (2-1 3.48) caught the loss, going six innings and allowing four runs.
The series finale comes tomorrow at Farmers Memorial Park in Sugar Valley as the Rattlers will try to close it out before the home fans. Anthony Glaser (3-0 2.17), who has had an outstanding year and postseason will pitch for Sugar Valley. Glaser was 20-13 with a 3.70 ERA. Vanya Vasylenko (2-0 2.33) has been designated the Viper starter by manager J. Jackson Samuel. Vasylenko had a great year with a 17-8 mark and a very impressive 2.76 ERA.
