2005 IPA Elite 8 Series

Ruthlandian Union

Middlefield Makes Round of Four, Whips V's 7-3
Volusia had the pitchers, but Middlefield had the bats and reigned supreme in their Elite 8 Series by taking three of the four contests. Middlefield will play the winner of Ranford-Belair Beach in the RU Final 4. The Roosters walloped the Vigilantes 7-3 with a 13-hit attack led by CF Ty DeWitt, rookie 3B Charlie Gamble (.273) and pitcher Julian Gilchrist (.500), who rapped two hits apiece and drove in a pair of runs apiece. RF Bailey Norcross (.419) went 3-for-3, including his 5th playoff homer. Even Gilchrist got a home run. Gilchrist also did the job on the hill, holding Volusia to three runs and six hits in eight and two-thirds innings. He struck out seven and walked three, needing help for the final out from Denny Yarrow. Starting pitcher Tommy Betanzos (0-2 6.60) lasted into the seventh and was the loser. The Roosters pelted him for four runs on nine hits.

Sunbirds Wins Squeaker 3-2, Ranford Series Even
The Ranford-Belair Beach Elite 8 Series will go to a fifth and final game. In a third straight pitchers' duel, the Sunbirds came out the winner 3-2 in 10 innings at Bayside Park to even up the series at two games each. C Little Jake Bungarooba (.407) led off the last of the 10th with a double, tagged up and moved to third on a deep fly to left and came flying home when he beat shortstop Rick Fargnoli's throw home on a grounder by pitcher Johnny Spears. Spears (2-0 0.00) continued his bullpen brilliance as he fired two perfect innings and fanned three of the six batters for the victory. Spears has won two games, saved another and not allowed a run in four games with 13 strikeouts in 10 innings. Jamie Phillips (0-1) came on in the 10th and suffered the loss.

Belair Beach took an early lead on 1B Phil Gravelli's (.433) RBI single in the opening frame. Ranford regained the lead 2-1 in the fifth on CF Warren Gravois' (.345) two-run shot into the stands. The Sunbirds gained a tie with a run in the eighth. Bungarooba walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on pinchhitter Ray Mathews' double. Offensively Belair Beach had nine hits to six for the Bulls.

Sunbird starter Tiny Lindgren worked into the fourth inning and shut out Ranford on one hit, but had to leave because of injury. Belair Beach is anxiously awaiting word from the doctors as to the severity of the injury. Lindgren is 0-2 in the postseason this year, but has pitched well with a 2.70 ERA in three starts. During the regular season he won 21 games.

Sunsets Tie Series, Beat 'Canes in 16 Innings
Playing at Seaside Stadium in Cape Coral, Summerland needed a win in the worst way. A loss and the season was over. The Sunsets prospects did not look good going into the top of the eighth inning. The Hurricanes starter Doug Lyons was cruising along with a 3-1 lead and just needed six more outs to take the Elite 8 Series. Fortunately for Summerland it did not happen. They rallied for two runs to tie the score and force it into extra innings, where they finally won it 6-3 in 16 innings. The win evened up the series at 2-2. The Sunsets got the winning runs when LF Schuyler ten Haken (.500) slammed a one-out triple and scored on an RBI single by RF Nickie Troxell (.227) and 2B Tucker Hill (.286) banged a two-run double.

Skipper Will Hackett got great relief work from his bullpen. They blanked the Hurricanes over the last ten innings. Bobby Winwood worked five innings, Phillip Westerfeldt went two innings and starter turned reliever Paul Felkner (2-2 5.75) was outstanding. Felkner fired three perfect innings and retired all nine batters he faced for the victory. Arlie Nichols (0-2 6.75) suffered the loss. He had blanked the Sunsets for five innings, before he faltered in the fatal 16th.

The Sunsets outhit the Hurricanes 14-10. Top hitters for Summerland were ten Haken with 4-7, 3B Randy Rudelmeier (.219) with two hits and two RBIs and Hill with two RBIs. 2B Fancy Phelan (.371) had three hits for Cape Coral. The two ball clubs will play for a Pro Cup Final 4 spot tomorrow afternoon in Cape Coral.
