Yanks Take Opener at Stadium
A bottom of the ninth hit with the bases loaded by bench player Jack Saltzgazer ended game one of this series in what was a tight contest.
With the Yankees leading 2-1 in the 6th inning Frank Robinson did what he does best and towered a shot out of the part for a three run home run giving the Orioles a 4-2 lead. Anothe run in the 7th gave the visitors what they thought was a comfortable three run advanatge.
Roy Johnson gathered a two run single to cut the lead to one run and then catcher Bill Dickey flared a single to left that allowed the tying ru to score. Bill Short couldnt hold off the Yanks out of the bullpen.
The game raced into the 9th as Red Ruffing battled the best he could, even though he didnt have his best stuff.
In the 9th the Yankees scored the winner and a good confidence building win. The Birds could be concerned as they dropped this one without the big Yankee boppers having big games.
