These floundering seafarers are preparing to set sail towards success
History has not been kind to the Canton Longshoremen up to this point. Perennially hovering around 90 losses, it's been hard for the club to gain any traction. While the team enjoys solid support from its base of diehards, let's face it: it's tough to keep the turnstiles moving when you've yet to finish above .500 in a single season. The interest is there, but so far management has been unable to capitalize on it.
The tide may be turning for this team positioned 60 miles off the shores of Lake Erie. One thing Canton
has succeeded in is making the most of their draft picks. They've reeled in big fish like
Bob Collins (the #13 prospect in the PEBA),
Bill Rice and
Raymond White through the June Amateur Draft, and it's bolstered their farm system to the point that it's now ranked as the fifth best in the league. Promising slugger
Ryosei Kichikawa has just graduated from the farm and is making an early impact in the big leagues. Add these players alongside the power bats of
Jack Miller and
Steve Fergus, and suddenly you've got the makings of a pretty potent offense.
The pitching haul has been less impressive.
Pedro Cruz has been the one constant; beyond him, the pickings are thin at the major league level.
Brian Ryan offers some hope of help from the minors, but this is an area a new owner will have to improve upon if Canton is going to navigate the choppy waters and sail towards success.
