The Rising Star League seeks one more
Good afternoon OOTPdev forums! I’m Buane and I’m the commissioner of the Rising Star League. The RSL is a Potential-Only OOTP league that currently uses OOTPX, but will be upgrading to OOTP11 with the conclusion of our current season. As evidenced by the banners above, we’re currently in our 11th season of online play and the league grows stronger and greater with every passing pennant.
The league is a purely fictional baseball league, but with many rules similar to that of the current major leagues. There are some small differences, and the teams may be fictional, but the game is realistic. It began play in the 1990 season, when I simmed season-by-season to the 2008 season, which is when online play began. This gives the league a nice history from which to draw, uh, history from.
Alas, I come not to celebrate the league but to admit a flaw. I have been unable - in all the years of the league - to find a stable owner for the once-proud New York Patriots franchise. Rudderless in the great baseball sea, the Patriots are enduring their sixth consecutive losing season and have not been to the playoffs for 22 long, looong years. So I come here searching for an owner who will make a valuable addition to our community and who will have the commitment to turning the Patriots back into playoff contenders.
First, a few details about the league. The Rising Star League is a fictional, potential-only league. We sim four times a week (Sunday night, Tuesday evening, Thursday evening, Saturday morning), one game week per sim. The league is made up of 24 teams, split into two geographical conferences which are made up of 3 divisions of 4 teams. We play a 162-game unbalanced schedule. We use the 1-10 talent scale. We like big butts and we cannot lie.
While I am the commissioner, I do not run a team. I feel that not owning a team affords me a valuable impartiality in creating game storylines and paying attention to keeping the league running smoothly. Not to mention the potentially unfair advantage it would give me in a league where real talents are hidden. By not owning a team I can stay dedicated to the league as a whole, instead of just one organization.
Does that all sound like something you want to be a part of? Good. Here’s what I expect from the owners of the RSL:
Free time. This is more of a courtesy to the other members of the league, but it’s an important courtesy. If you can’t check the league forums daily, respond to any Private Messages you may have received, stay current with the latest file and make frequent exports so I know you’re alive and your team is taken care of…then this league is probably not for you. I’ve been down that road before with other owners. This is not some super-competitive cutthroat serious-with-a-capital-s league. It’s a fun, competitive league. But owners who don’t export are about as fun as no owner at all, and owners who export but who we never get to see around the boards aren’t much better. Ideally I’d like to find someone who wants to be a member of both our league and our community. We don’t have requirements or rewards for writing articles or voting in threads…if you want to write articles, as some of our current members do, that’s awesome. If you just want to sit back, make a hundred trades and try and win some division titles, that’s also awesome. If you want to export once a month and let Private Messages sit in your inbox for weeks at a time, well then it’s probably not going to work out.
You don’t have to be a baseball junkie (though it helps!) or an OOTP expert either. When we launched the league it coincided with the release of OOTP9. We took on a good number of people who were “first time” online league players. Now, I don’t believe any of them made it more than 3 or 4 seasons, for one reason or another.
This is not to say that if you’re new to OOTP11 or this would be your first online league that I wouldn’t consider you. I just recognize that sometimes people may not realize what they’re getting into. They may realize they don’t have the time, or they don’t find OOTP fun after a few months, or they can’t stand that we always talk about stats like OPS, FIP, ERA+, RC/27, or they make a really dumb trade that cripples their team…these are all possibilities. But if you’re a good person and you love baseball and you’re well spoken and you legitimately want to give it a shot, then I don’t care whether you’ve been in thirty OOTP online leagues or if you last played strat-o-matic a few times thirty years ago.
I’m probably being overly wordy, but maybe that’s another way to weed out the kind of owners who will be able to commit long term to the league and those that will not. If you’re still reading this, I guess you’ve passed the first test!
Anyway, here’s a little inside information on the New York Patriots.
The Patriots play in what is probably the weakest division in the league: the Eastern Conference’s Cygnus Division. Last year, the Cygnus Division winner had 82 wins. The year before that, only one team finished with more than 71 victories. The division winner the year before THAT? 86 wins.
The Patriots play in NEW YORK. Bright lights, broadway, big stage, all that jazz. If you can make it there, you’ll make it anywhere. Now, New York is home to two teams, so the Patriots’ Media Contract isn’t as massive as it could be. But it’s still sizable enough that there’s money to be spent.
The Patriots have one of the game’s brightest young stars: Elmo Englehardt. The Big E has put up some crazy good numbers in the last three seasons, though he’s occasionally had trouble staying on the field. Last season, thanks to a 372/.446/.627 line, he took the Eastern Conference’s Hitter of the Year Award beating out shortstop extraordinaire Matt Goff (a feat which, as a member of the league, you’ll quickly learn is no small task).
The Patriots have an excellent young pitching prospect, Winston Robbins. Ok, Robbins is currently suffering through a horror-show of a rookie season, but he’s only 22 and the Patriots’ poor defense is probably not helping things.
Alright, the rest of the roster ain’t great. But the team has some pillars to build around, if nothing else.
Anyway, this post is bordering on a novella now, so I’ll wrap things up. If you’re still reading along and you’re interested in becoming a member of the Rising Star League, then here are a few more resources to check out:

League Rules
I recommend giving the League Rules a good read. There’s a lot in there, and if you’re interested in joining the league it will be a good idea to make sure you’re comfortable and familiar with all the rules.
I’m not going to fill the vacancy on a first-come-first-serve basis, so please take your time in reviewing the league and deciding if you’re interested and have the time to spare for an online league. J You can get in touch with me via PM on these forums, via PM on the RSL League Forums (my username there is Buane), or via E-Mail if you’d like (GMYale@gmail.com).
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I hope to talk to a few of you soon!
