Tycobbian Union Pitcher of the Year Named
The Turon Typhoons have a superstar and a budding Hall-of-Famer. It's Nicky Engstrom, this year's Tycobbian Union Golden Arm Award selection. This gifted hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance. He has now won the best pitcher award three times. The 26-year-old Engstrom compiled a 24-12 record in 39 starts, tallied 266 strikeouts in 289 innings and recorded a 1.96 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .208 batting average against him. It's the sixth straight season Engstrom has gone over the 20-victory mark. He has never failed to win 20 games in his career. Engstrom had the best ERA in the IPA and also won the most games in the TU. The Typhoons came in second in the TU South, missing the playoffs by just one game.
Mahaska's young 21-year-old southpaw Joey Wallace had a marvelous year with a 23-9 record and a 2.05 ERA to wind up second in the poll. Wallace led the Haymakers to the TU north pennant this year. Summerland's solid veteran Denny Coulon was in third place in the voting with a 23-13 mark and a 2.58 ERA. Not bad at all for a fifth-place team. Coulon is 36 and has played 15 seasons in the IPA.
