2017 Ruthlandian East Mid-Season Recap
Elegants Too Strong, 12 Games Up At Mid-Year
Last year's Pro Cup champs, the Eastshore Elegants are taking up where they left off last season. Nobody can compete with them. The Elegants have soared to a huge 12-game lead at the All-Star Game and should coast to a second straight RU East pennant with a strong chance to win the Pro Cup again. Beechwood and Cold Creek are tied for second, followed by Elnora, 18 games behind. Marston, Sugar Valley and Wynnamac are deadlocked for fifth and trail by 19. Poor Belle Plaine pulls up the rear and is 23 games off the pace.
Manager Killer Brewster's Eastshore Elegants (53-20) are overpoweringly good with super pitching (2.80 team ERA) and solid hitting (.275 BA)... not great defensively (.970 FA), but it doesn't seem to matter... last year's RU MVP and All-Star Danny Siegfried (10-4), Eddie Lance (12-4), All-Star Melvin Key (12-4) and Al Froelich (10-3) form the best foursome in the IPA and All-Star closer Jack Wilson (1-1) is as good as it gets in the bullpen with 15 saves and a 0.92 ERA... Eastshore has a solid line-up led by LF Todd Sheppard (.348/14 HR), RF Stan Cuccinello (.312/14 HR), CF Larry Lowe (.289/5 HR) 2B Gerry Garner (.274/11) and SS Gil Lantz (.280/8).
The Beechwood Bobcats (41-32) are knotted up with the Cold Creek Catamounts for second place in the RU East... Bret George is in charge in Beechwood... he has three fine starters in All-Star Terry Kuznetsov (13-4), Knucks Nomellini (11-5) and Billy Ray (8-8)... best Bobcat bats are All-Star CF Vic Valenti (.354/16 HR), SS Rolf Kellgren (.318/4 HR) and LF Ryan Ray (.273/14 HR)... and the Bobcats play very good defense with a .978 FA... George has the second-best club in the RU East.
Cold Creek (41-32) has a new manager... CF Trip Holmes took over for his granddaddy this season as a playing manager... Holmes (.290/12 HR) is still quite a ballplayer at age 38... the Catamounts get by with offense and poor pitching... All-Star RF Emile Stosha (.316/17 HR) and LF Charlie Blankenship (.333/12) head up a potent attack... it might be tough for Cold Creek to stay with Beechwood unless Holmes can find some pitchers.
The Elnora All-Stars (35-38) also have a new skipper in Sam Malone... Elnora is in fourth place, but headed nowhere... Malone has bad pitching, but good hitting, led by RF Lloyd Voss (.332/8 HR), 1B Michael Griffin (.292/14 HR) and C Leon Carter (.280/11 HR).
Marston, Sugar Valley and Wynnamac are tied for fifth in the standings, 19 games off the pace... Johnny Walters doesn't have much pitching this season in Marston (34-39), but he does have two good vets in CF Russ Woodward (.307/16 HR) and 3B Jimmy Holman (.254/14).
Manager Gibby Bobkins' Sugar Valley Rattlers (34-39) can score runs well, but can't stop the opposition... a 5.03 team ERA will just not cut it... two All-Stars Glenn Christian (.294/14 HR) and C Hal Stevenson (.336/15 HR) led the Rattler bats... Stevenson is a 9-time All-Star.
The Wynnamac Sundowners (34-39) are a mediocre team, but do have a fine starter in Jerry Meeks (11-6) and a good closer In Cal Crawford (2-1), who has 13 saves and a 1.85 ERA... some quality bats, too, topped by RF Joey Eaton (.320/16 HR), CF Clive Farham (.286/16) and long-time star LF Big Hoss Burkhalter (.280/11 HR).
The Belle Plaine Musketeers (30-43) are still at the bottom of the division... owner Boo Ladrieux fired himself and gave the job to former pitching star Lou Dozier, who just retired last year... Dozier did not inherit much in the way of talent except for veteran twirler Brad Anderson (9-6) and SS Scott Hammill (.310/12 HR)... Dozier has a lot of work to do to get the Muskies competitive.
