Ruthlandian Union Elite 8 Series
Rocky Rapids Rocks Eastshore Late 6-3
The Rocky Rapids Snappers took a giant step in the RU Elite 8 Series with defending Pro Cup champion Eastshore with late-inning rallies to knock off the Elegants 6-3 at Snapper Stadium... the victory was the Snappers third in in a row and gave them a 3-1 edge in the best-of-seven series... Rocky Rapids trailed 3-1 going into the home half of the seventh... Danny Siegfried seemed to be in control, when a double, single and an error, a passed ball and a sac fly knotted the score at 3-all... in the eighth another Eastshore error and 2B Paul Shelton's 2-run single gave the Snappers the game... the Elegants committed 4 miscues in the game... winning pitcher Junior Noland (1-0 2.12) toughed it out... Eastshore tagged him for 3 runs in the first three innings, but he stiffened up and shut them out over the final 6 frames... Noland allowed 5 hits, whiffed 4 and walked 2 in going the route... closer Paul Walker (0-1 0.00) lost it by giving up 3 unearned run in his only inning... Rocky Rapids racked up 13 hits and were led by Shelton (.294) with 2 hits and 3 RBIs and LF Scott Camden (.333) with 3 hits and 3 runs scored.
McKay's HR Ties Claxton-Ancona Series At 2-2
In game four, Claxton got a pair of homers late to defeat Ancona 4-3 to tie up the RU Elite 8 Series at two games piece... the Diamonds entered the 8th down to Clete Dukas and the Red Elephants 3-1, but LF George McKay (.462) cracked a homer for the fourth game in a row to knot the game at 3-3... K. C. Moerdijk's (.267) followed with solo clout to bring home the victory for the Diamonds... Kaz Hayagawa (1-1 5.52) notched the win with the help of Tony Haverkamp... Hayagawa tossed 8 innings and surrendered 3 runs and 7 hits with 5 strikeouts and no walks... Haverkamp retired the Red Elephants in order for the save... losing pitcher Clete Dukas (1-1 3.18) went all the way, gave up only 4 hits, but 2 of them were homers.
Torres Tops Turon Again, Z's Up 3-1
In a match-up of two of the best hurlers in the IPA, Tiago Torres of Luxora topped Nicky Engstrom of Turon 3-1 to capture game four of the best-of-seven series giving the Zorros a surprising three-to-one lead in the TU Elite 8 Series... the Typhoons are one of the favorites for the Pro Cup this season... Torres (2-0 2.25) went 8 innings and yielded only 1 run on 6 hits... Engstrom (0-2 3.00) went all the way in defeat, striking out 8 and issuing 2 walks, while allowing 9 hits... Jay Brewer came on to seal the verdict with a 1-2-3 ninth for his second playoff save this year... Zorro CF Francisco Ortego (.316) singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh, breaking the 1-1 tie... 2B Billy Whitney (.375) got them an insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth.
Ozarka's Osterman Fires 2-Hit Shutout, Ties Bucs
Ozarka's ace Benny Osterman fired a splendid 2-hit shutout and beat Bay St. Clair 3-0 with the help of a 3-run homer by SS Nat Ferrell (.667) in the top of the second inning, the only runs in the game... Osterman (2-0 1.00) totaled 8 Ks with 2 walks and outdueled Dean Dailey (0-2 4.20), who also pitch the whole game, permitting 7 hits and 3 runs... the Nats victory in game four gave them a split in the series so far.
