2018 IPA Pro Cup Playoffs
Ruthlandian Union Elite 8 Series
Elegants Still Alive, Stop Snappers 7-2 In Game 5
The Eastshore Elegants needed somebody to step up big time... They were on the edge of extermination in the RU Elite 8 Series with Rocky Rapids, trailing three games to one... Bix Hansen didn't come into the stadium riding on a white horse and wearing a white hat, but he certainly played the hero part and kept Eastshore's hopes for a third successive Pro Cup alive by throttling the Snappers 7-2 in game 5 at Snapper Stadium... Hansen (1-1 2.65) held them to 6 hits and blanked them until the ninth... lousy defense played a part in the game... Rocky Rapids made 4 errors and gave up 5 unearned runs... Eastshore put 5 big ones on the scoreboard in the second inning and never looked back... 21-game winner Joe Anderson (1-1 2.08) sustained the loss, allowing 6 runs in 5 innings, but only 2 were earned... RF Stan Cuccinello (.300) and SS Art Parker (.286) led the Elegants with 2 RBIs each... 3B Bob Leach (.353) had a solo homer for Eastshore... RF Larry Hollis (.300) provided all of the Snappers runs with a 2-run homer.
Diamonds Nip Ancona 8-7 On Lowe's HR In 11th
Game 5 was a homer-filled thriller at Avalon Stadium in Claxton with 7 homers... the Diamonds and the Ancona Red Elephants went back-and-forth for 11 innings before LF Benton Lowe smashed one into the stands to give Claxton an 8-7 triumph and a one-game edge in the RU Elite 8 Series... the Diamonds led 3-0 after one... Ancona tied them up 3-3 in the third... Claxton went up 6-3 after seven... only to have the Red Elephants jump back in the lead 7-6 in the top of the ninth... the Diamonds managed to tie it again in the bottom of the ninth to send it into extra innings... the victory went to George Ferguson (1-0 0.00) with two flawless frames... Ferguson retired all 6 batters he faced in the tenth and eleventh innings... Nick Rasenko (0-1) was nailed with loss... Rasenko blew the save by surrendering the tying in the ninth and then served up Lowe's game-winning blast... the Diamonds cracked 4 out of the park... In addition to Lowe, RF K. C. Moerdijk (.300), LF George McKay (.471) and CF Tommy Rivers (.214) went deep... it was the fifth game in a row McKay has homered... the Red Elephants rapped 3 into the stands with LF Kenny Willard (.174), RF Louie DiMucci (.400) and RF Duane Godfrey (.200) each getting one... Ancona had 12 hits and Claxton 11.
Turon Cuts Z's Lead To 3-2 In TU Elite 8
The Turon Typhoons broke out with 14 hits in game 5 of the TU Elite 8 Series to thrash the Luxora Zorros 9-6 at De la Vega Stadium and cut the Z's lead to three games to two... LF Andy Porter (.636) sparked the win with 5 hits and 3 RBIs, including his 2nd home run in the series... C Cory Moore (.500) also had 2 hits and 3 RBIs and RF Dominick DiCaprio (.316) delivered 2 hits and 2 runs batted in... Moore and 1B Clyde Kingsford also chipped in roundtrippers... Luxora was led by 3B Pablo Santa Cruz (.222) with 2 hits and 2 RBIs and 1B Robby Christianson (.235) with a solo homer... Winning pitching Shane Farmer (1-1 7.04) weathered 12 hits and went all the way, though he gave up 6 runs... Zorro starter Steve Aaron was raked for 5 runs in his 3 innings for the loss... the Typhoons put up a 6-1 lead after 5 and then held on as the Z's rallied with 3 in the sixth and 1 in the eighth, narrowing it to 6-5... however Turon made it 9-5 in the top of ninth to beat back Luxora's belated rally.
Bucs Take Series Lead, Coates Beats Nats 6-3
The Bay St. Clair Buccaneers got a strong mound job by Benny Coates, who stumped the Ozarka Naturals 6-3 in game 5... the victory gave the Bucs a three-to-two edge in the TU Elite 8 Series... Coates (2-0 1.53) pitched into the ninth and gave up 3 runs and 8 hits for his second victory in the series... Steve Richt came in with two outs and got the save... the defeat went to Ted Cardinale (0-2 6.94), who was routed after 4 innings... the Buccaneers got to him for 6 runs and 7 hits... pacing the Bay St. Clair attack were CF Bill Howell (.375) with a two-run two-bagger in the opening frame and SS Jimmy Sawyer with a two-run clout in the third... that gave them a 6-0 cushion after just 3 innings... the Bucs outhit the Nats 9 to 8... pinchhitter James Mack homered in defeat.
