Ruthlandian Union Final 4 Series
Kotas HR Puts Ancona Ahead In Series
When you get your chance, make the best of it... that's exactly what 21-year-old Alekos Kotas (.333) did in game 3 of the RU Final 4 Series at Jay Loman Park in Ancona... the back-up first sacker for the Ancona Red Elephants bashed a 3-run homer in the last of the eighth to stun favored Rocky Rapids 5-3 and give Ancona a surprising two-to-one edge in the best-of-seven series... that clutch clout made a winner out of Dave Blair and a loser out of Joe Anderson... 3B Benny Morgan (.231) drove in Ancona's other two runs... Blair (3-0 3.75) hurled a shaky game, walking 5 in 8 innings, but he limited the Snappers to just 3 base hits, all good for extra bases... John Sharpe was summoned in the ninth and got the save, his second of the playoffs... Rocky Rapids was held to 4 hits... Joe Anderson (1-2 2.14) was done in by his faulty defense... the last three Red Elephant runs were not earned... Anderson allowed 6 hits, fanned 4 and issued no walks... LF Scott Camden (.286) hit a lead-off homer and C Hank Bethel's (.294) 2-run double in the third gave the Snappers an early 3-1 lead... Anderson nursed a 3-2 lead until the ill-fated eighth.
Tycobbian Union Final 4 Series
Howell's Triple Gives Bucs 5-4 Victory In 12 Innings
At home at Shoreline Park, Bay St. Clair rallied twice and finally beat Turon 5-4 in 12 innings for its first win in the TU Final 4... the Typhoons carried a 3-0 lead into the last of the eighth and were on the verge of its third straight win, but the Bucs came back on an RBI single by Bill Howell (.424) and a 2-run single by SS Jimmy Sawyer (.091) to send the game into extra innings... Turon CF Mac McCurnan (.211) put them ahead by a run in the top of the 12th with an RBI single... but Howell blasted a 2-run walk-off triple off losing pitcher Juan-Carlos Torriente (0-1) to give the game to Bay St. Clair... 1B Clyde Kingsford (.205) and RF Andy Porter (.619) both hit homers for the Typhoons... Kingsford's was a 2-run shot and Porter's was a solo blast... Each has 3 in the postseason... Buccaneer closer Steve Richt (1-0 2.08) garnered the win, courtesy of Howell's homer ... Richt worked 3 innings and allowed 1 run and 3 hits... Bay St. Clair outhit the Typhoons 12 to 7... Howell led the way with 4 hits... both clubs got good outings from its starters... Ted Farentino went 8 for the Typhoons and permitted 3 runs on 9 hits, while the Bucs Dean Dailey held Turon to 4 hits and 3 runs in his 9 innings.
