Barnes Ups Hit Streak to 45 Consecutive Games

Saturday, August 3rd, 1872: Ross Barnes's consecutive-game hitting streak has now climbed to 45 games. The Philadelphia second baseman smacked 2 hits against Baltimore in today's game at Newington Park to extend it, but he has mixed emotions about it.

O'Rourke Hits in 30 Consecutive Games
Monday, August 5th, 1872: Long hitting streaks don't happen very often and when they happen it perks up everybody's interest. No one knows how long it will go -- it could end tomorrow -- but baseball fans and Jim O'Rourke are enjoying the moment right now. The 21-year-old Brooklyn catcher extended his string to 30 consecutive games in 23rd Street Grounds today.

Wednesday, August 7th, 1872: It seemed that Brooklyn center fielder Dennis Coughlin could do no wrong as the Atlantics kayoed the White Stockings 20-7 today as he rapped out 5 hits in 6 at-bats. Chicago pitchers couldn't get him out as Coughlin seemed to know which pitches they were throwing.

Thursday, August 15th, 1872: The Brooklyn Atlantics lost to the Cincinnati Reds 4-2 today at Avenue Grounds, but perhaps the bigger news was the end of Ezra Sutton's 41-game hitting streak as well as Jimmy Hallinan's hit streak ended at 26 games and snapped Jim O'Rourke's, the 21-year-old catcher's, hitting streak at 32 games.

Fortunately things went our way in the ballgame today and we came away with a 11-10 win. But Norton still continued his streak."

Saturday, August 24th, 1872: Frank Norton came into the today's game against Philadelphia rolling along with a 20-game hitting string, but he left it on the field at Jefferson Street Grounds. The 27-year-old Cleveland third baseman went 0-for-4 against the Athletics as the Forest Citys were beaten 13-12.
