The Blues mound staff snapped the 24-year-old second baseman's hitting streak at 30 games. Barnes failed to get a hit in 4 at-bats to end it.

Canaries Lose Hines for 2-3 Months
Friday, August 14th, 1874: The Baltimore Canaries were dealt a severe blow when Paul Hines was hurt making a defensive play recently in a game against the St. Louis Brown Stockings. After the game, the team trainer reported Hines might have to spend a lengthy time on the disabled list. Today doctors confirmed it, ruling the 19-year-old center fielder out for the rest of the season with a torn rib cage muscle. They indicated it would take Hines at least 2-3 months to heal.

Hitting Streak Still Alive for Jewett

Tuesday, August 18th, 1874: Cincinnati's 29-year-old catcher Nat Jewett has had a fine run at the plate over the last few weeks. His consecutive-game hitting streak has reached 20 games now. Today Jewett extended the streak by going 1-4 against White Stockings pitching. The streak has brought him a degree of attention that he has tried to deflect. Jewett always prefers to talk about his teammates' accomplishments rather than his own. After the Reds 4-3 triumph over Chicago at Avenue Grounds he downplayed his part in the victory.

Carey Sidelined for 9-10 Months
Tuesday, August 18th, 1874: The Baltimore Canaries announced this afternoon that shortstop Tom Carey would be out of action for 9-10 months. He sustained a torn labrum playing the Blues. It happened colliding with a player at a base.

Nat Jewett failed to get a hit in today's game against the Atlantics and his 23-game hitting spree has come to an end. The 29-year-old Cincinnati catcher was 0-for-4, but the Reds got the win and defeated the Atlantics 14-5.
