Saturday, October 3rd, 1874: Who needs batting practice? Holly Hollingshead of Philadelphia apparently doesn't as he peppered Cleveland with a 5-hit outburst in today's game. He got the hits, but lost the game. The Blues pulled out a 16-14 win.

Deacon White Claims NL Batting Title
Wednesday, October 7th, 1874: The 1874 National League batting title went to Deacon White. A key contributor for Boston this year, he hit .349. His 95 hits included 10 doubles, 5 triples and 1 home run. The Red Stockings catcher also scored 51 runs and knocked in 41 while playing in 60 games.

Blues Jones Takes AL Batting Crown

Wednesday, October 7th, 1874: The American League batting race ended with Cleveland's Joe Jones on top with a .375 average. The Blues catcher was officially named the winner today. For the season he totaled 103 hits, no home runs with 33 RBIs and 53 runs scored. At the award ceremony Jones told reporters the key to his hitting success this season. "I stayed focused and tried to get a hit in every at-bat."

Friday, October 16th, 1874: There is great joy in Philadelphia today after the Athletics thumped Chicago 7-1 to cop the 1874 North American BaseBall League Round 1. They defeated the White Stockings 4-3 to take the series.

This was the 3rd time Philadelphia has garnered the league title. During the regular season the Athletics chalked up a 37-23 mark and finished in first place in the American League.

National League Selects Premier Rookie
Thursday, October 29th, 1874: League officials announced today that Joe Kernan of the Cincinnati Reds has been selected the 1874 Newcomer of the Year Award in the National League.

The talented second baseman finished his first year batting .323 with 1 home run, 36 RBIs and 37 runs scored.

AL's Best Rookie Named
Thursday, October 29th, 1874: Orator Shaffer turned a lot of heads in American League circles this season, putting together a solid rookie campaign. Today he claimed the AL Newcomer of the Year Award.

The 23-year-old Cleveland right fielder played in 51 games, hitting .347 with no home runs, 39 RBIs and scoring 48 runs.

Top NL Pitcher Announced
Saturday, October 31st, 1874: The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1874 has been presented and the National League winner is George Zettlein of Chicago.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Zettlein. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the White Stockings star told reporters.

Zettlein excelled with an impressive 32-19 record in 56 starts. In 446 innings he yielded 510 hits and 23 walks, while striking out 40 and compiling a fine 1.92 ERA.

AL Outstanding Pitcher Award Winner Announced
Saturday, October 31st, 1874: The votes are in for the 1874 American League Outstanding Pitcher Award. It has been bestowed on Rynie Wolters of the Philadelphia Athletics.

The 31-year-old Athletics ace finished the year with a 32-18 mark, logged 49 starts, threw 447 innings, yielded 535 hits, struck out 17 and held the opposition to a .267 batting average.

Deacon White Chosen NL's #1 Batter
Sunday, November 1st, 1874: Deacon White, the talented Boston catcher, certainly made his name known among National League hurlers this season. He hammered them for 95 hits, 10 doubles, 5 triples, 1 home run, 41 RBIs and scored 51 times. That kind of output made him the choice for National League Outstanding Hitter Award for 1874.

1874 Premier Batter Picked By AL
Sunday, November 1st, 1874: "Words can't quite express how it feels right now," was the comment Bill Boyd of the Philadelphia Athletics made today after being named the 1874 Outstanding Hitter Award recipient. "It's an honor to join the list of the other fine players that have won this award."

Boyd smacked opposing pitchers around for a .329 batting average and a .352 on-base percentage this year, tallying 12 doubles, 6 triples, 5 home runs, 33 RBIs and 75 runs scored.
