Martin Mullen Hurt, Out 6 Weeks
Sunday, March 26th, 1876: Philadelphia fans will be disappointed to learn that Martin Mullen suffered a strained hamstring while throwing the ball in today's game. After the doctor informed the Philadelphia Athletics manager that Mullen was expected to miss 6 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the right fielder could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.
Baseball America Top 100 Prospects List Published
Saturday, April 1st, 1876: The season is about to start, so it's time for Baseball America to publish the annual Top 100 Prospects list. This year 22-year-old reliever Lon Knight of the Brooklyn Atlantics is the #1 prospect overall.

Waterman Goes 5-5 Against Cleveland
Saturday, April 1st, 1876: It was a magical day at the plate for the Brown Stockings Fred Waterman. The 30-year-old third baseman helped lift St. Louis to a 7-3 win over the Cleveland Blues today at Kennard Street Park. Waterman smacked 5 hits in 5 at-bats to spark his club to victory.

Nelson Sizzles with 25-Game Batting Streak
Monday, April 10th, 1876: The Blues won the game today, but you would have been hard pressed to find anyone talking about it. The focus seemed to be on shortstop Candy Nelson extending his hitting streak to 25 games by going 3-for-5 in the game.

John McMullen replaces Wolters in victory. Ross Barnes is sizzling, going 2-5 for a .522 BA so far this season.
Nelson Goes Hitless, Streak Stopped at 27
Thursday, April 20th, 1876: For 27 straight games, Candy Nelson tried to ignore his hitting streak. "But you guys in the media wouldn't let me." The 26-year-old Cleveland shortstop can forget about it now -- it's over! -- courtesy of the Baltimore Orioles. They held him hitless in 5 at-bats and snapped his consecutive-game hitting string at 27. The streak ended on one good note, however, Cleveland won the game, beating the Orioles 6-3.
