Thursday, April 1st, 1880: The Cleveland Blues announced this afternoon that starting pitcher Bill Stearns would be out of action for 8 months. He sustained shoulder inflammation playing the Athletics. It happened throwing a pitch.
Ward Guns Down Orioles
Thursday, April 1st, 1880: After his 4-0 shutout win against the Orioles, John Ward said, "I went out there to try and eat up innings and help out our bullpen. I felt I had my good stuff... and it turned out my command was solid and my breaking balls were good."
They were better than good as the Brown Stockings pitcher put up 3 strikeouts, surrendered no walks, allowed 5 hits and kept the bullpen phone quiet all day long.
Red Caps Chill Kelly's Hot Streak
Thursday, April 1st, 1880: Reds catcher King Kelly was one of the hottest hitters in baseball, coming into today's game against Boston with a 23-game hitting streak. However, the Red Caps put a chill in his bat, at least for today, and held him hitless in 5 at-bats during the Boston 4-3 triumph at South End Grounds I.

Galvin Holds Cincinnati Scoreless
Tuesday, April 6th, 1880: Speaking after the game, the Boston manager said, "Pud Galvin had everything going for him. He changed speeds effectively, stayed down, had a lot of movement... he had it all... masterful."
Galvin held the Cincinnati Reds to 4 hits and fashioned a fine 2-0 shutout. He had no walks and 2 strikeouts in the game.

Tuesday, April 13th, 1880: Fred Corey really wowed everybody at the ballpark with his 5-0 shutout victory over Cincinnati today. The Brooklyn pitcher mystified the Reds in a strong performance. He gave up 4 hits and totaled no walks and 4 strikeouts.
