2023 Tycobbian West Final Recap
BSC Bucs Overtake RH Reds In TU West
Month after month the Bay St. Clair Buccaneers played winning baseball to overtake last year's winner Rolling Hills for the Tycobbian West crown. The Reds had led by 3 games at mid-year, but slumps in July and August cost them the title. The Buccaneers captured the division by 5 games with the best record in the IPA. Kenwood trailed by 7 games and came in third with Bayview fourth and 9 games back. It was the Bucs fifth title in 9 years.
Guy Rondre guided Bay St. Clair (97-57) to the most wins in its history and took top honors with the most wins in the Tycobbian Union this season and second-best in the IPA to Elnora's 98 wins in the Ruthlandian East... the Buccaneers are a good, all-around club with no glaring weaknesses... veteran Eddie Lasky (25-8 2.79) had a career year in his 11th season with help from a fine freshman Greg Moss (24-9 2.40), who was even better... bullpen specialist Marv Thomas (5-7) also stood out with 30 saves and a 2.25 ERA... offensive leaders were 1B Jerry Todd (.321 BA/31 HR/106 RBI), SS Van Kellner (.281 BA/25 HR/84 RBI and RF Don Smithers (.237 BA/24 HR/80 RBI).
The runner-up Rolling Hills Reds (92-62) are out of the same mold as division winner Bay St. Clair... solid pitching, solid bats and good gloves... Erroll Gaudet (23-11 2.94) and Sal Jordan (16-12 3.49) topped the mound staff with support from rookie Whammer White (15-7 3.78) and closer Alfonso Gonzales (6-4), who piled up 37 saves and a fine 2.14 ERA... at the plate it was rookie 1B Glenn Childress (.313 BA/28 HR/120 RBI/88 R), rookie LF Pat Webb (.323 BA/24 HR/106 RBI/90 R) and 14-year vet CF Donnie Lewis (.293 BA/6 HR/47 RBI/128 R) leading the way.
The La Claire Lynx (81-73) were a distant third, 16 games off the lead, but Maka Bardinda's team stepped it up at the plate and on the hill and climbed up from seventh place... the Lynx batted .270 (3rd) with 140 homers (12th) and racked up 812 runs (2nd)... the team ERA improved slightly from a very poor 4.67 to 4.16 (26th)... leading the La Claire hit parade was long-time star 3B Flash Devlin (.341 BA/32 HR/110 RBI/124 R), rookie 1B Jess Swain (.313 BA/18 HR/111 RBI/102 R), rookie 2B Norm Petitjean (.315 BA/22 HR/108 RBI/88 R) and rookie Charlie Chapman (.280 BA/21 HR/95 RBI/80 R)... 2023 was the Year of the Rookie in the IPA.
Aaron Hankins in Kenwood (79-75) lacked offense as usual and wound up in the fourth spot in the standings, 18 games behind in the race... the Wildcats survive on very good pitching (3.37 ERA - 6th), especially in the bullpen (2.24 ERA - 1st)... all of the relievers were 2.67 and under in ERA, paced by closer Glenn Kennedy (7-7) with 16 saves and a 2.17 ERA... veteran Jody Gentry (22-8 2.14) and rookie Thomas Norman (21-11 2.76) were truly outstanding, too... young CF Babe Hankins (.274 BA/12 HR/81 RBI/89 R) was the only reliable hitter in the lineup... the senior Hankins named his son after the all-time industrial and amateur home run king, Baby George, the skipper of the Crystal Lake Crushers.
The fifth place Denton City Redbirds (78-76) were 19 games out and just barely missed the first division... lousy hitting cost them, ranked 27th with a poor .241 team BA... the pitching was much better with a 3.43 ERA (8th)... Ford Whiteman's top hill performers were rookie Phil Cooper (18-13 3.39), rookie George Hudson (18-15 3.49) and closer Rich Hopkins (3-5) with 31 saved games and a super 1.11 ERA... no hitter had any good stats.
The Bayview Vikings (75-79) with skipper Walter Johanssen at the helm wound up 22 games out in sixth place in the TU West... 8-year vet Harald Turi again was the ace of the staff with a 17-14 mark and a 3.35 ERA... Don Griggs was 20-11, but benefited from good run support... Griggs posted a 4.38 ERA... solid veterans 2B Tommy Shore (.282 BA/12 HR/51 RI/110 R) and LF Norm Owens (.276 BA/22 HR/89 RBI/94 R) sparked the offense... both Shore and owens are Gold Glovers... Owens has been named 7 times, Shore twice.
Since winning the TU West in 2020, it's been all downhill for Gary Louis and his Arlon Champions (67-87)... the Champs have been on the bottom or near the bottom ever since, falling to seventh this season, 30 games out... Arlon tied with Chicopee for last place... 1B James Slaughter is the only decent bat with a .311 BA, 12 homers and 71 runs batted in... rookie closer Buddy Palmer (6-4) is the top pitcher with 5 saves and a 1.55 ERA.
The Chicopee Braves (67-87) only have one strong player... Dominick DiCaprio was obtained in a trade with Turon this year and the 37-year-old RF put up strong numbers to lead the team almost by himself... DiCaprio batted .306 with 31 roundtrippers, 114 RBIs and scored 90 times... manager Harry Fleetfoot needs more players like DiCaprio... talent is sparse in Chicopee.
