Americans Ray Takes AL Batting Crown
Monday, September 23rd, 1889: Irv Ray, the 25-year-old right fielder of the Boston Americans, was officially crowned American League batting champion for 1889 today. He batted .353 with 5 home runs and 83 RBIs while playing in 151 games.

Childs Tops NL with .358 Average
Monday, September 23rd, 1889: When the dust settled on the 1889 National League campaign, Cupid Childs came out on top with a .358 batting average. "This was a nice way to end the season," said the Brooklyn Bridegrooms second baseman at the awards presentation yesterday. The 22-year-old Childs completed the year with 213 hits that included 48 doubles, 10 triples and 1 home run.

Wise of St. Louis Wins Pitching Triple Crown
Monday, September 23rd, 1889: Bill Wise of St. Louis has done what few pitchers in North American BaseBall League have been able to do. He's won the Triple Crown, leading the league in all three major categories: wins, ERA and strikeouts. The Browns star finished 1889 with a 31-14 mark to pace the National League in wins. He also posted a league best 2.08 ERA and topped the league with 248 strikeouts. A season good enough to put him as a strong favorite to take the NL Outstanding Pitcher Award.
