200 Wins for Boston's Welch
Tuesday, July 2nd, 1895: It was a special day at South End Grounds III for Boston's Mickey Welch. The Beaneaters ace logged his 200th career win against the Pirates. In the 8-0 decision Welch tossed 9 innings, surrendered 6 hits with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.
"I'm real fortunate that I had the opportunity to play with such good players during my career," said Welch. "I just couldn't have drawn it up any better. I'm glad I did it in this uniform, too. Boston is a great organization to play for."
In his career Welch has amassed 200 wins and 150 losses with an ERA of 2.86 and 1092 strikeouts.
Swartzel Signs for 8 years
Thursday, July 4th, 1895: Happy times in Philadelphia as the Athletics and star starting pitcher Park Swartzel put the finishing touches on a $16,000 contract extension that will keep the 29-year-old in town 8 years longer.
The signing is great news for Philadelphia because players of this caliber are hard to come by.
For the year Swartzel has a 17-10 record with a 3.21 ERA in 28 starts.
Big Switch: Van Haltren for Joyce
Saturday, July 20th, 1895: A major trade has been executed between the Chicago Colts and Louisville Colonels, one that has stunned the baseball world. The Colts traded 29-year-old center fielder George Van Haltren to the Colonels for 29-year-old third baseman Bill Joyce. When BNN contacted the Colts GM, he said, "Putting this deal together was a lot of hard work, but the payoff will be tremendous and Colts fans ought to be excited about it". The Colonels GM added, "We put a lot of thought into this... this trade will win us more ballgames". BNN analysts are up in arms debating who got the better end of the deal.
So far this year Van Haltren is batting .333 with 2 home runs, 70 RBIs and 62 runs scored.
This year Joyce has batted at a .253 pace with 74 hits, 5 home runs, 64 RBIs and scored 62 times.
