Valmara's Lem Pro Cup MVP Pick
Valmara's great young right-hander Teddy Lem stood head-and-shoulders above everybody in the Pro Cup playoffs. No one else truly stood out in the Pro Cup Most Valuable Player poll this year conducted by The Islandian Times. The 22-year-old Lem went 3-0 in 4 starts and chalked up a very impressive 1.76 ERA. Lem was almost a unanimous choice. Valmara's fine left fielder Sonny Oliver was a distant second in the poll. Mahaska pitchers James Allington and Sammy Kafelnikov were third and fourth in the voting with Viper second sacker Ron Freiberg coming in fifth.
Oliver sparked Valmara with a .319 batting average with 15 hits in 14 playoff games, 3 homers, 10 RBIs and 7 runs scored, along with 8 walks. Allington was 4-0 in 5 starts with a fine 2.54 ERA. Kafelnikov posted a 3-2 record with a 2.93 ERA in 6 starting assignments. Freiberg had a good postseason with a .302 mark, 6 doubles, 7 runs batted in, 9 runs and 11 walks.
