2027 Ruthlandian West Final Recap

Sligo Survives In RU West 4-Team Struggle
With 10 games to go the Sligo Rovers and Middlefield Roosters were deadlocked for the top spot in the Ruthlandian West, just one game ahead of Colfax and Fort Benton... the Rovers went on an 8-2 tear and left the others in the dust, surpassing Colfax by 4 games and defending champ Middlefield and Fort Benton by 5 games... Sligo was third last year.

Eddie Keys and his Sligo Rovers (86-68) got fine pitching this year from All-Star Les Patterson (22-12 2.71) and Earl Perkins (15-8 2.69)... these two starters plus solid work from Sam Tate (15-16 3.46) and Lou Page (12-13 2.99) were key factors in the Rovers success... closer Milt Flanagan (5-7) added 31 saves with a 3.02 ERA... Sligo had decent power with 127 homers (10th-tied), but were frail offensively, ranking only 26th in scoring... tops at the plate were LF Biff Blauer (.297/15/63/87) and RF Teddy Brunet (.311/26/77/68), 1B Johnny Sackett (.297/10/58/85), rookie CF Darryl Collins (.262/18/95/65) and C Sherman Albert (.280/21/65/56).

The runner-up Colfax Blasters (82-72) got themselves a new skipper this season, the former pitching great and Hall-of-Famer, Ilya Szabo, who replaced Clem Rogers after his 26 years stint... Szabo was 327-210 with a 2.57 ERA in his 19 seasons... Colfax came in fifth in 2026... Smoky Rogers (17-12 3.15) and James Elliott (20-16 3.26) were the top starters... Cliff James was 19-12, but posted a 4.25 ERA... runs were hard to come by with a .247 team BA and only 73 homers (32nd)... 3B Dino Manale (.271/4/54/90), CF Hal Granders (.274/15/67/94) and 1B Doug Kirkwood (.268/12/94/70) were the best of the lot... the Blasters are good defensively with a .978 FA.

The Middlefield Roosters (81-73) were dethroned this year after winning the division for the past four seasons... a September collapse did them in... Bailey Norcross' Roosters wound up in a third-place tie with Fort Benton... the offense was down with a poor .237 BA (31st), though they had 157 homers (2nd)... but the pitching was good with a 3.37 ERA (8th)... the bullpen was great with a 2.65 ERA (1st)... Judson Davis (12-7 2.76), Glenn Tackett (15-10 3.41), Danny Denver (18-11 3.69) and Tyrus Cobb (18-17 3.52) were a good foursome... Despite leading the IPA in saves, closer Waylon Hillman was inconsistent, winding up with 37 saves and a 2.91 ERA, but he was just 1-11 in overall record... LF Floyd McClellan (.247/29/81/72) and 1B Paul Smiley (.243/24/72/70) led the club offensively, but no one hit well except RF Vic Ivarsson... he topped the team with a .308 BA, 12 HR and 56 RBIs in a platoon situation.

After 5 years in the RU West basement, the Fort Benton Defenders (81-73) moved up a notch from fourth last year to third this season... manager Robbie Brooks has solid hitting with a .266 BA (4th) and good pitching with a 3.24 team ERA (6th)... rookie Frankie Quinn (17-12 2.92), Edd Farmer (14-13 2.80) and Augie Marquis (15-13 3.11) gave him some quality starters... at the plate CF Vince Boylan (.271/25/95/88) and LF Stan Saunders (.282/12/60/82) led the way... young Jerome Cox fared well splitting time at SS with a .326 BA, 5 homers, 35 RBIs and 44 runs.

The Forest City Lumberjacks (73-81) came in fifth, guided by owner/manager Robbie Jackson, now in his 27th season... the Lumberjacks climbed up from 7th last year... it's been 14 years since the 'Jacks made the playoffs... Forest City has good power with 153 homers (4th), fine defense with a .978 FA, but is only an average team otherwise... offensively the Lumberjacks are paced by CF Fred Weldon (.282/31/83/88), 1B Barry McKnight (.258/25/88/70), 3B Rusty Hood (.237/21/71/66), C George Arnick (.287/14/71/55) and 2B Jackie Jackson (.280/6/56/76)... Jackson's only pitcher this season was rookie Doug Cox, who was outstanding with a 14-6 mark and 2.48 ERA, but he was lost in early August with a torn labrum... the rest of the starters are just journeymen.

The sixth-place Volusia Vigilantes (72-82) improved slightly in wins this season, but ended up in the same spot as last year in the standings... the V's are in a huge postseason drought with no playoff appearance since 2006, yet they have regularly made the RU first division over the years, but not recently... this is the fourth straight season Alfonso Feliz's club has been in the second division... it's hard to find anything good about the Vigilantes except for rookie pitcher Cisco Almeida (19-16 2.63) and rookie SS Joao Rosales (.284/15/99/70).

After two good years of finishing in second place, the Stoner Stars (71-83) slipped badly and plunged to seventh place in the RU West, mainly because its pitching rotation was in constant flux... all-time ace Billy Chapel (256-207 3.30) was given up on for the first half of the season... same thing happened to young Matthew Jarvis, who was 15-11 with a 3.41 ERA last year... Chapel was 17-12 in 2026, but ballooned to 4.34 in ERA, the worst in his career... activated in July, Chapel did well, going 6-6 with a fine 2.69 ERA in 14 starts, but Jarvis didn't come back until September and was only 1-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 7 starts... manager Benny Stern just said they didn't earn a roster spot in spring training and left it at that... Raul Hidalgo had another fine year with a 2.78 ERA, but was only 15-14... spot starter and setup reliever Darrell Geoffrey (10-8 2.43) had a good year... at the plate the Stars hit well for average with a .262 mark (8th), but had little power with 86 roundtrippers (29th) and were only average in scoring runs (16th)... 3B Jeff Henderson had an excellent year with a .324 BA, 18 home runs and 93 RBIs... 1B Fletch Fowler was productive, too, with 22 homers, 99 RBIs and 82 runs scored, while batting .273... rookie RF Neil Mooney batted .296 with 7 home runs and 69 runs batted in... and CF Al Rispone hit .271, scored 94 runs, hit 10 homers and drove in 66.

The Rocky Rapids Snappers (64-90) had another bad year, remaining in the cellar for the second year in a row, causing manager Ryan Noland to step down... He is currently seeking someone to replace him... Noland will remain the general manager... not much to say positive about the Snappers... they are near the bottom of everything... the youngest of the Noland family, 22-year-old Walter Noland, pitched well this season with a 10-10 record and a solid 3.15 ERA... he has played 4 years now with a career 56-46 record and a fine 3.19 ERA... 5 Noland siblings have played for the Snappers... the oldest, Junior, played for 11 years with a fine 169-144 record, winning 20 games four times and making the All-Star team twice... He retired in 2026 at age 32... RF Tiger, now with the Marston Nine, was with the Snappers for 11 seasons with a .293 career BA and 103 home runs... Tiger is 31... Tiger's twin Tommy is also 31... Tommy was the Snapper SS for 3 years (2024-2026) and is a career .265 hitter... He is now on the reserve roster... and Cyrus, age 24, is a Snapper backup outfielder, but has hit only .217 lifetime... 1B Angelo Nardone is the Snappers only decent bat... Nardone is hitting only .269 and leads the club with 14 homers and 63 RBIs... as a team Rocky Rapids is batting only .240 (29th), ranks 30th in scoring and has hit only 92 homers (26th).
