When I found this pic in the Topps archives, I thought it would be easy to identify:
Even though the uniform number is a Spring Training variation, the Reds only wore these unis from 1961-1966, and they couldn't have had that many LHPs then, right?
No, they didn't. Problem is, none of them seem to match this guy. Here's a list of all Cincinnati LHP, 1961-1969 (assuming they wore the '66 unis in 1967 Spring Training, and that the player might have taken a little time to reach the bigs):
Gerry Arrigo (thicker nose, ears pinned back)
Marshall Bridges (racially dq'd)
Ted Davidson (brown hair, brown eyes)
Bill Henry (brown hair, ears protrude)
Billy McCool (brown hair)
Dan McGinn (dark hair, thicker eyebrows; does slightly resemble him, though*)
Jim Merritt (brown hair, brown eyes)
Bob "Lefty" Miller (this guy looks more like the RHP Miller)
Chet Nichols (too old)
Joe Nuxhall (too old, brown eyes)
Jim O'Toole (brown hair, brown eyes)
Claude Osteen (black hair, brown eyes)
Bill Short (brown hair, brown eyes)
Ted Wills (huge nose, pointy chin)
So, if not one of these, who? Is this a "Jack Billingham of the Expos" situation, where young blue-eyes here was traded away before ever appearing for the Reds? Thanks in advance.
*-it'd be cool if it were McGinn, since we don't have him as a Red, but I've never seen anyone's eyebrows get that much thicker over a few years…
