Thanks,
tnfoto. I'm still amazed at the complete lack of coverage for a prominent rookie, playing for a team whose young talent was supposed to be leading them upwards. (The A's got the cover of
Sports Illustrated during Spring Training, being as how Alvin Dark had taken them from 10th in '65 to 7th in '66, and they had all this young talent ready to blossom. A couple of years premature, but it's not as though they were wrong. And hey, Dark
did win a World Series with this crew…it's just that Finley went through three other managers [Bauer, McNamara, Williams] while Alvin "Take a hike, son, take a hike" Dark was exiled in Cleveland.) Given that the #1 pick in the draft (ugh…Steve Chilcott) wasn't doing anything for the stupid franchise that wasted a #1 overall on a guy who never made the majors (yup, the Metsies), you'd think the #2 would get some coverage, no? Even then, I doubt that Reggie was the shyest flower in the land. Strange.
Is the
Kansas City Star not part of Newspaper Archive? (I'm not a subscriber to the archive.) Pity, but thanks for the AFL pic, anyways.
