Kirke Big Deal in St. Louis: Hits for Cycle
Tuesday, June 14th, 1910: Jay Kirke of the St. Louis Cardinals touched all the bases today at Washington Park III in the 19-6 victory over Brooklyn, hitting for the cycle. He teed off on Superbas pitching for a single, double, triple and a home run. The feat is rare in baseball as it requires a game of no fewer than four hits and the unusual combination of a home run, which requires a batter to hit for some power -- and a triple, which requires a batter to have both speed on the basepaths -- and a favorable fall of the ball.

"The hardest part was the triple," confessed Kirke, "A lot has to go right for you to get a triple. It is real easy to get greedy trying to stretch a double and get thrown out. It's really hard to get a three-bagger." He finished his special day with 6 hits in 6 at-bats, 5 RBI, 3 runs scored and a place in the record book.

Jay Kirke singled in the 1st, hit a two-run double in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, tripled in the 6th, tripled in the 8th and hit a two-run home run off Bob Dresser in the 9th.
