IPA Final 4s On Tap
Defending IPA Pro Cup titleholder Southport is gone at the hands of the eighth-seeded Mahaska Haymakers, so there will be a new champion in the Islands. Tuckanarra, Waleska, Sligo and Mahaska made the cut and will now go at it in the RU and TU league championship series with the victors tangling for the much-coveted Pro Cup. Top seed Tuckanarra will now try to fend off Mahaska in the Tycobbian Final 4 and third seed Waleska will encounter the number five seed Sligo Rovers in the Ruthlandian Final 4. Both series will be best-of-seven affairs.
In the Tycobbian Final 4 both clubs are hot off fine performances in the Elite 8. The Tuckanarra Blue Jays swept a good La Claire club and Mahaska surprised the Southport Sun Sox and eliminated them in five games. Most experts feel the Haymakers don't have enough pitching to stay with the Blue Jays. The Tucks also are a little better at the plate than Mahaska. The Haymakers get the edge defensively. Tuckanarra is a powerhouse that won 102 games this year. Mahaska has probably run out of surprises this season and will meet its match here. The Blue Jays will win in 5 or 6.
Most analysts are on the Waleska bandwagon in the playoffs this season. However, many think that Sligo's excellent pitching may win the day. The Rovers thoroughly throttled a pretty fair Marston club in the first round and could do the same thing to the Westerners, who have suspect pitching. Waleska's vaunted bats did well against a very good Valmara team and will have to do even better to whip the Rovers. This series is a toss-up with a slight edge to Sligo. The series should go six or seven games and be a humdinger.
