Ken Boyer, not just an MVP, but mentor to another. (Keith Hernandez, whom Boyer managed in the minors, and who won the MVP in 1979 when Boyer was managing the major-league Cardinals. Keith credits Boyer with saving his career, when he was having trouble sticking with the big club in 1975-1977.)
A young Ron Swoboda, two years after Casey Stengel praised him as "19 years old, and in 10 years, he's got a chance to be one of the best players in the game." (Of course, the more famous part of the quote is where Casey moved on to Greg Goossen, saying Goossen was "20 years old, and in 10 years, he's got a chance to be 30." Heh.)
