2030 Ruthlandian North Mid-Season Recap
Ancona Surprise Leader In RU North
Vaunted Valmara has several serious challengers in the Ruthlandian North this season... the Vipers have won the last four years and six of the last seven seasons... the surprise team is the Ancona Red Elephants... a fifth-place club in 2029, they are atop the division by 3 games over LaGrange and 4 up on Valmara and Ranford... Taranto is fifth, just 5 games out.
Surprise team/Best Pitching: Ancona
much-improved with a .270 BA (10th) and 3.26 team ERA (5th)... appears to be a serious title contender... mound corps sparked by All-Star Razzy Angelis (12-4/1.94)... vets Kyros Halkias (6-7/3.23) and Vince Arndt (5-8/4.08) must step it up in last half of season... Lonnie Quick (4-3/3.26) must continue to pitch well... bats have to continue to produce... free agents Jimmy Howell (.358), Jerl Coleman (.291) and Koora Nawajuk (.284) have made a huge difference in the team... veteran stars Todd Nasso and Alekos Kotas are having subpar seasons... 33-year-old Nasso had 16 homers and 45 RBIs, but is batting only .239... lifetime Nasso has compiled a .285 BA... 32-year-old Kotas' power numbers are way down... Kotas has only 3 homers and 24 RBIs... in his career Kotas has averaged 25 home runs and 100 RBIs.
Second place LaGrange has two quality starters in Alex Gillespie (10-6/2.40) and Ryan Janssen (8-8/3.44), plus the booming bats of All-Star Chris Charbonnier (.328 BA/15 HR), Russell Watkins (.288/15 HR) and Randall Hawson (.285/14 HR)... the Sports should hang tough in the second half and give Ancona and Valmara a run for the money.
Defending Champion: Valmara
Offense down slightly for the third-place Vipers (tied with Ranford)... pitching suffering... rose up from 3.05 to 3.75 ERA... lost starter Clem Carmouche (6-3/3.92) for the season... Carmouche averages 13 wins a season in his 14 years in the league... other starters struggling: Carroll Cain (5-5/4.31) and Teddy Lem (6-9/3.79)... top bats belong to Gerry Kazmarek (.332 BA/8 HR), All-Star Floyd Randolph (.281 BA/8 HR) and Teddy Szymanski (.255 BA/13 HR)... best pitcher is second-year man J. B. Boutin (9-5/2.92)... for Vipers to defend division title, Cain and Lem must have good second halves.
Best Hitting Team: Ranford
the fourth-place Bulls are batting .288 (2nd), but are 10th in scoring and lack HR power, ranked 29th with just 46 homers... lots of good swingers in the lineup with Percy Whitehead (.355), Terry Kerr (.330), Sonny Statum (.328) and Elton Graff (.313)... less than average on the mound with a 3.81 ERA (21st)... only 7-year vet Sam Hart (10-6/3.29) is having a good season... lackluster pitching will doom the Bulls.
The fifth-place Taranto Tars are within striking distance of first place, trailing by only 5 games, but don't have the staying power of the other clubs... the Tars will be without their top hitter Greg Murphy for six weeks... Murphy was hitting .318 with 12 homers and 38 RBIs when he was injured in early June... Filippo Villano (.331) is the only reliable bat left in the lineup... not much in the way of pitching either, except for Paulie Pieroni (7-6/2.96) and inconsistent Laz Tomassini (11-7/4.20).
Sixth in the RU North standings are the Far Mountain Redhawks, 7 games off the pace of first place Ancona... the Redhawks have decent pitching with the likes of Jakob Wagner (8-5/2.94) and Jeff Cooper (8-10/3.76), but they have trouble putting runs on the scoreboard... Ryan Mizell is the top bat with 12 roundtrippers, 43 runs batted in and a .263 BA... Johnny Becker is batting .310 with 5 homers and 33 RBIs.
Next-to-last Glasco has woeful pitching (4.27 ERA-31st) and is just average at the plate with a .258 BA (18th) and 60 HRs (16th-tied)... Donnie Young (.353), Warren Steele (.325) and Eddy Martin (.299) sports the best bats on the club, while the hurlers are paced by Sam Gilmore (7-7/3.46) and Darien Russell (10-8/4.79).
Most Disappointing: Kilkenny
sunk to the cellar after being runner-up to Valmara last year... thrived with a brilliant 2.67 ERA... up to 3.46 this year.... Christy Cane (2-9/4.99) had been lousy, down from 16-13 and a 2.61 ERA last year... ace Dave Whitaker has fallen from 21-15 and 2.39 to 4-6 and 3.06 this year... offense is pathetic with a .233 mark (32nd), but the Cats hit with some power (65 HR-6th)... top performers at the plate are Ronnie Rousell (.289/16/43) and Garris Aiken (.255/14/37).
