Padres Earn Series Lead In Front Of Full House
Over 50,000 watch Lollar Beat Rival Dodgers
Jack Murphy Stadium - The series thus far coming out of Dodger stadium saw two very different games and the swing of momentum and performance continued at Jack Murphy stadium. Tim Lollar followed the footsteps of Eric Show and had the Dodgers under control from the beginiing while not allowing an earned run to his name. Bob Welch for the Dodgers suffered through five runs in six innings and a late Dodger rally did little more then soften the 9-5 scoreline.
Graig Nettles opened the tally in the first inning with an RBI single scoring Allen Wiggins who had three hits on the night. Tony Gwynn and Kevin McReynolds also added three hits a piece to power the middle of the Padres lineup. McReynolds nailed a two run double in the 4th inning to open up the game to a three run Padres lead.
In the 6th inning Lollar helped his own cause. So often a pitcher throwing a good game finds a way to contribute with the bat as Lollar doubled in a run and leaving the game in the 8th had done a job very well done.
In the 8ththe Padres broke things open even more as four hits including RBI singles from Gwynn and Wiggins took the lead up to eight runs. The Dodgers put a hurting on Goose Gossage in the 9th inning lighting him up for four runs before Sid Monge came on to end the game through a Dusty Baker strike out.
The Padres answer very well to the pressure of playing at home and coming back from such a poor game two. It seems that the San Diego team have the confidence to beat the Dodgers and have seen suprizingly good pitchijg to back them up.
To survive the Dodgers will have to steal one at Jack Murphy.
