Manic Monday! Monday! Monday!
Three Home Runs For Rick Monday As Dodgers Move On
Dodger Stadium - In emphatic fashion that obviously came from being back in front of their home fans, the 81 Dodgers emilinated the 84 Dodgers four games to two in a 12-3 convincing win. The story of the day however was the performance of one player, Rick Monday had what could be the performnace of the tournament so far slugging three home runs and reminding many of another three home run performance by another player against the Yankees in the same era, that of Reggie Jackson.
The Padres seemed to be reeling a bit to start this game after the tough loss in game five a few nights ago and although they would take the lead, it was to be a long night for them and start Ed Whitson. The Padres were leading by two runs in the bottom of the second when the Rick Monday show began.
Monday hit a solo home run to right center to cut the lead to one run and soon there after the Dodgers would take off. Dusty Baker tied the score with a home run an inning later when Monday would come up again with a man on in the 4th. Monday hit the ball almost to the exact same spot over the center field wall for his second home run and a breakthrough 4-2 lead. The Dodgers would all two more in the fifth and starter Jerry Ruess did just fine with the lead in hand.
The game was completely wrapped up in the 7th when the Dodgers took a bite out of the Padres bullpen. Ken Landreaux whalloped a three run home run off Sid Monge in a four run inning that made the score 10-2.
In the 8th inning it was time for Rick Monday to make a good night into a great one after Jay Johnstone walked with Greg Booker on the mound. Monday saved his best for last as he took a fast ball deep into right field some 440 feet away for his third home run and his fifth RBI of the night. Monday wasnt suppose to be a major factor in this series or game, but the confidence Tommy LaSorda showed in him paid off in the perfect way.
Fernando wont be needed in a game seven and Jerry Ruess went the distance in one of his most stress free starts imaginable. It was a day for Dodger Blue and Rick Monday and his prodidious power wont be forgotten going forward.
"We were tired of hearing how good they are. It is fun while it lasted," said Monday, "but now it is time to move on"
