NABL News: Playoffs begin
Wednesday, October 1st, 1924
Some clubs have coasted to make the playoffs -- others have scrapped tooth and nail to get here. After a long, sometimes seemingly endless regular season, it gets down to who can win a short series -- by hook or crook, talent or luck. That's what it takes to capture the North American BaseBall League championship. The top teams will vie in the North American Series starting today:
St. Louis Browns versus Brooklyn Robins.
Simmons Is AL Swing King

When it came to hitting in the American League this season, none did it better than Al Simmons of the Cleveland Indians. He surpassed all his peers with a .378 average to take the 1924 batting crown. The 22-year-old center fielder had 230 hits, including 35 doubles, 8 triples and 21 home runs. Simmons participated in 147 games and also chipped in 125 RBIs and scored 110 times.
Jackson Really Swings with .400 Season
Wednesday, October 1st, 1924
Joe Jackson is soaking up the praise today after hitting an eye-popping .400 this season. The Chicago Cubs right fielder surpassed even his own expectations.
"I thought I could hit .350, maybe," he said, his eyes misting over. "To go beyond that..." His voice trailed off before he continued, "It's like a dream."
The Cubs star made the season a nightmare for his opposition, rattling off 228 hits including 37 doubles, 11 triples and 9 home runs. He scored 95 times and collected 94 runs batted in.
St. Louis's Bottomley Bats .403
Wednesday, October 1st, 1924
Add the name Jim Bottomley to the list of baseball players to hit .400 or better in a single season. The St. Louis first baseman joined that elite group by hitting a jaw-dropping .403 this year.
"To be mentioned among baseball's immortals," said Bottomley, "is beyond my wildest dreams."
Bottomley's 255 hits included 50 doubles, 18 triples and 22 home runs. He also scored 113 runs and batted in 113.
