With Wind At Their Back, Yanks Almost Through
Slaughter and Skoworn Drive In 7 in 14 Run barrage
Wrigley Field - Everyone knows that the friendly confines of Wrigley field and its conditions can change from day to day. On this day the wind picked up and went from left to right while the rains stayed strong and even delayed this one. The game produced runs, in fact 23 of them, but it was the Yankees who had as expected more of the muscle and find themselves one game away from eliminating the Cubs and moving on.
Likely neither starter wanted to take the mound in these conditions as Mark Prior and Whitey Ford had the odds against them and wouldnt last long. The Cubs put three runs on the board in the bottom of the first with two sacrafice flies and a Sammy Sosa RBI single. The answer didnt take long for the Yankees as Bill Skoworn hit a two run home run in the 2nd.
New York then put five runs on the board and knocked Prior out of the game. Enos Slaughter cleared the bases with a triple while Bill Skoworn also drove in another run. Up 7-3 going into the fourth the Yankees had that look in their eye and Norm Siebern homered off of Kyle Farnsworth with a man on and soon the lead was bloated to 10-3. After the Cubs would score two, Gil McDougald took advantage of the wind for a home run in the 5th.
Moises Alou would actually drive in four runs in the game and his two run home run gave the Cubs some hope cutting the lead to 12-8 in the 6th inning. Chicago would never get back however and the long game would end with the Yankees knocking on the door to ending this series.
"It not just a cliche" added Dusty Baker after the loss, "when their offense gets going it really is tough to stop."
The Yankees have been doing much of their damage without major contributions from star Mickey Mantle. Mantle has yet to go deep or drive in a run in the series.
