If a team has a lot of unspent money for extensions and free agents at the end of a season, is that money simply lost (with the team payroll being the only figure carried over when the next season's finances are announced)?

In other words, if I blow a fortune on a one-year free agent contract, will that extravagance cost me next year, or just reduce the owner's profit this year?
