Tuesday, September 29th, 1931
The regular season has given way to heightened anxiety around the clubhouse as teams with championship aspirations prepare for the final sprint to the finish line. It's time for the great players to step up and earn their fame, for the average players to get a shot at immortality and for rookies to make a name for themselves. Some dread it, some relish it. Everyone who dreams of playing in North American BaseBall League wants to have a once-in-a-lifetime shot at championship glory. The 1931 North American Series kicks off today with these exciting match-ups:
Cleveland Indians versus Pittsburgh Pirates.
Indians Star Earns AL Bat Title
Tuesday, September 29th, 1931
Shanty Hogan was born to be a ballplayer. "Pops always said I learned to swing a bat before I learned to walk." Hogan, the 25-year-old Cleveland catcher, really displayed his hitting ability this past season. His .358 batting average led all American League hitters. He collected 190 hits, socked 13 home runs, scored 80 runs and drove in 92 runs. The AL's top batter also played in 133 games, had 22 doubles, 2 triples and walked 32 times.
Chicago Star Is Triple Crown Winner
Tuesday, September 29th, 1931
1931 will be forever etched into fans minds as National League star Chuck Klein won the 7th Triple Crown in NABL history. The 26-year-old Chicago right fielder shined all year long, batting .373 with 34 home runs and 131 RBIs, topping the league in all three categories.
"I am thankful to have been blessed with the ability to play baseball and it is truly an amazing feeling to have such a season. It will definitely be one of my most memorable accomplishments." said Klein.
NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed
Saturday, September 12th, 1931
One of the few things certain about the 1931 first-year player draft is that it will be held 30 days from now. Today the NABL announced its list of players filing for the event, though little is publicly known about any given player, sending scouts from each of the league's clubs scattering to uncover what they can in as little time as possible. Some clubs will draft the ideal prospect late, while others will stake their futures to big-name prospects, those deemed most likely to succeed by the fickle, nameless consensus.
The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be:
1. Joe Medwick, 19 year-old left fielder out of high-school.
2. Frankie Pytlak, 23 year-old catcher out of college.
3. Debs Garms, 24 year-old center fielder out of college.
4. Len Koenecke, 27 year-old left fielder out of college.
5. Billy Herman, 22 year-old second baseman out of college.
6. Stan Hack, 21 year-old third baseman out of college.
7. Bill Brubaker, 20 year-old third baseman out of college.
8. Tex Carleton, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
9. Johnny Allen, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
10. Frank Demaree, 21 year-old center fielder out of college.
