The ability to use Layers in Photoshop can't be understated. It's amazing what you can do with them. Two great elements of Photoshop are the ability to change Layer Styles and the ability to change the Opacity of Layers.
In your Photoshop, on the Layers tab, you have a drop down that says "normal". Select the drop down and you'll see a list of other options... darken, multiply, overlay, soft light, hard light, etc.
I suggest taking the Rebels logo with the white background and putting that layer on top of a colored background.. something kind of reddish. Then select the Rebels layer, and play around with how all the different Layer Styles look. Multiply, Overlay and Soft Light are 3 of my favorites to use. They all give different looks depending on the image and the background layer.
Then take the same logo and background and play around with Opacity. Try 75%, 50% and 33% opacities to see how they all look.
