V'S VICTORIOUS IN OPENER, BARTON TOUGH
Journeyman Sammy Barton got the opening game start for underdog Volusia against heavily-favored Elnora and the slim southpaw throttled the All-Stars 4-2, holding them to just 4 hits and 2 runs in 8 innings... Barton (1-0) got the win with one-inning help from Marv Webb, who sat Elnora down in order... Barton struck out 5 and walked 3 in a strong performance... during the season Barton was 4-3 mainly as a reliever and sometime starter... he was given the start by manager Alfonso Feliz because the All-Stars have trouble against lefties.
The loss went to 20-game winner Jeremy Sellers (0-1), who worked 8 good innings, but was done in by shoddy defense... Sellers allowed 3 runs, but only none of them was earned... after three scoreless innings, Volusia scored 3 runs in the top of the fourth with 3B Ryan Krychek, SS Sal Higgins and Barton droving in the runs... in the bottom of the fifth Elnora cut it to 3-2 on a 2-run homer by 3B Danny Bierhoff... the V's got their last score in the ninth on pinchhitter Rodrigo Camara's sacrifice fly.

Thurber (0-1) worked into the seventh, yielding 3 runs on 9 hits with 4 Ks and 2 walks.
LaGrange took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth when 1B Chris Charbonnier drove in a run with an RBI groundout and another run came in via a wild pitch... the Westerners got a run in the fifth on a triple by 3B Dorak Aranda and a groundout by 1B Glenn Childress... in the sixth LF Loco Dillinger tied the score with an RBI single and C Tony Brinkerhoff doubled in the eventual game-winning run... Aranda and Brinkerhoff led Waleska with 2 hits apiece.
Tycobbian Union
MONTIES POWER PAST HAWKS 8-5 WITH 4 HR
The pitching matchup never materialized between two elite IPA hurlers... the bats prevailed in the opening game of the Tycobbian Elite 8 Series... Brown was 23-11 this season, while Michael was 17-10.
SS Dean O'Donnell paced the Hawks with 3-5 and 2 RBIs... he homered in seventh... 2B Tommy Vavas also went 3-5 in defeat... North Hills outhit San Alejo 12 to 10.
BRAVES BOMB BLUE JAYS 10-5 IN GAME 1
