Big Numbers Net Williams Triple Crown

Pirates right fielder Ted Williams will look back on 1947 as a magical season after eclipsing his peers in the three major batting categories -- batting average, home runs and RBIs. He batted .356 with 53 home runs and 146 RBIs to pick up the 9th Triple Crown in NABL play.
"It's been an incredible year," said a smiling Williams, "I really can't explain how this happened. A lot of things have to go your way to accomplish something like this. You have to stay healthy and you have to stay away from long slumps."
The Pittsburgh skipper told reporters at the press conference, "There were days when Ted played hurt. It really is amazing the things he has done this year."
The latest Triple Crown winner added, "I'm thankful to Pirates fans and to my teammates for their encouragement. It was a joy to come to the ballpark every day."
.317 Average Wins Title for Hopp
Tuesday, September 30th, 1947
According to his manager, "Hard work and a good, quick swing were the keys to Johnny Hopp winning the American League batting championship this season." It became official with the close of the regular season that the St. Louis center fielder had won the title with a .317 batting average. During the year Hopp played in 131 games and accumulated 148 hits, including 21 doubles, 9 triples and 4 home runs. The AL's leading batter also put up 48 RBIs and scored 68 runs.
