ST. JOHN SINKS SPORTS 4-3 IN OPENER
Opening up in the friendly confines of Cathedral Stadium, the St. John Crusaders squandered a lot of hits, but finally squeezed out a 4-3 triumph over the LaGrange Sports in game one of the Ruthlandian Elite 8 Series... Marty Blankenship's walk-off homer in the ninth off Ryan Janssen put the Crusaders in the win column and gave the victory to Jeremy Kirk (1-0), who hurled a complete game and held the Sports to 6 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 6 and walking 6.
St. John had 15 hits, but stranded 14 baserunners... rookie C Sawyer Deane, CF Art Kelley and 2B Norm Murdoch paced the Crusaders with three hits apiece... LaGrange's 20-game winner Walt Thurber allowed 12 hits in his 6-plus innings, but permitted only 3 runs... he struck out 4 and walked 3 and left on the short end of a 3-2 score... reliever Ryan Janssen (0-1) lost it... in his 2 frames he allowed 3 hits and the winning run.
Tycobbian Union
HAWKS BEST ELITES 6-5 IN 11 INNINGS
The homestanding North Hills Hawks had to come from behind twice in the late innings at the Hawk's Nest to subdue the Colchester Elites 6-5 in 11 innings in the first game of the Tycobbian Elite 8... trailing 5-4 in the last of the eleventh the Hawks tied it up on Jumbo Carter's base hit and won it on Tommy Vavas' game-winning single.
North Hills had to come back in the last of the eighth... Colchester had taken the lead 4-1 on Blake Barrister's solo homer and Jamie Scott's 2-run triple... the Hawks sent the game to extra innings on Ric Hamilton's 2-run double and Gerry Rice's game-tying triple. The Elites went ahead in the top of the eleventh when Joey Rogers got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded... the third Hawks' hurler Tony Mack (1-0) notched the win with 3 good innings of relief... he worked the ninth through the eleventh and gave up one run on one hit... Mack walked 2 and fanned 3... Sean McBride (0-1) suffered the defeat as he was battered for 2 runs and 3 hits in the fatal last inning... both starters fared well... Colchester's 22-game winner Dan Scott worked 10 innings, permitted 4 runs on 10 hits, while North Hills' 23-game winner Jeff Owens gave up 4 runs, only 2 earned, and 7 hits in his 7 and 2-thirds innings.

TUCKS TROUNCE BRAVES 10-4 IN GAME ONE
Pro Cup number-one seed and defending IPA champ Tuckanarra outslugged second-seeded Chicopee 10-4 in the Tycobbian Elite 8 opener at Central Park Stadium in Tuckanarra... the Blue Jays socked 12 hits and got the benefit of 4 Braves' miscues and 7 bases on balls in the win... the Tucks busted up a 4-4 deadlock with 6 runs in the seventh... they had trailed 3-1 after 5 frames.
Blue Jay starter Bobby Reid (1-0) fought off the hard-hitting Braves for the win... Reid tossed 7 innings and was tagged for 10 hits, but he checked Chicopee on 4 runs, 3 of them earned... two relievers Jack Rogers and James Warner saved the day for Reid, each with a perfect inning in the eighth and ninth... Heyoka Chaska (0-1) had a tough outing and was the losing pitcher... Chaska was victimized by shoddy defense... 4 of the 8 runs he allowed in 6 innings were not earned... overall Chaska was ripped for 10 hits and walked 4.
It was open season on two 20-game winners today... the hitters had their way with them... C Jon Paul led the Tucks with 3 hits and 3 RBIs... RF Spade Weldon went 2-for-5, scored twice and batted in a run... SS Eddie Darby and LF Lorne Evans drove in 2 runs each... and 3B Lynn Starr and 2B Nicky Weill scored 2 runs apiece.
Chicopee had 10 hits and were paced by 2B Todd Goodwin, 1B Kurt Gustavsen, CF Charley Kota and SS Felix Roubique, all with a pair of hits each... LF Alfredo Cobos and C James Gamble both batted in 2 runs in defeat... Goodwin scored 2 of the Braves' runs.
The Blue Jays have now beaten the Braves five straight times in the playoffs. Last year in the first round Tuckanarra had to overcome a 3-0 lead by Chicopee and take four in a row to avoid elimination. They went on to win the IPA Pro Cup.
