IPA ICON WELCH AND STARR TRIPLETS RETIRE
Among the retirees at the end of the season were IPA icon Duncan Welch and the illustrious Starr triplets. Welch is a surefire Hall-of-Famer with a remarkable 350-255 record compiled in his 20 years in the league, mainly with the Crystal Lake Crushers of the Ruthlandian Union. Welch finally called it quits this year after an 11-20 mark for sixth place Claxton at age 41. Welch led the Crushers six division flags and to two victories in the Pro Cup Finals in three appearances and was named Pro Cup MVP in 2020 and 2023. He also was acclaimed the Ruthlandian MVP in 2020 and 2023 and won three Golden Arms in 2019, 2020 and 2023. Welch also made the All-Star teams on four occasions. He was especially effective in the postseason as he racked up a sensational 17-5 record with a 2.50 ERA in 26 starts. Welch will unquestionably be a first-ballot inductee into the IPA Hall of Fame in Marston.
The IPA has never seen the likes of the Starr triplets, who starred for years in Tuckanarra, sparking the Blue Jays to seven pennants and two Pro Cup titles. Quinn, Glynn, and Lynn Starr all announced their retirements on the same day at a press conference in Tuckanarra. They played from 2022 to 2036, a total of 15 years, and all called it a career at age 38. Quinn and Glynn were fine pitchers, while Lynn was a standout third baseman. Quinn was 219-164 with a 2.97 ERA, Glynn was 172-130 with a 3.24 ERA and Lynn battted .296 lifetime with 317 homers and 1184 RBIs. He captured one TU Golden Bat Award in 2029, was also voted the TU MVP that same year and made the All-Stars 4 times. Quinn and Glynn really sparkled in the playoffs. Quinn notched a 16-5 mark with a 3.08 ERA in 23 starts, while Glynn was 10-2 with a superb 2.63 ERA in his 13 starts. Glynn Starr won the 2023 Pro Cup MVP trophy with a 4-0 mark and a brilliant 1.75 ERA in 5 starts and Quinn snared it in 2024 with a 5-0 record and a 2.85 ERA as the Blue Jays won back-to-back IPA titles.
Other players of note who retired this season were long-time hurlers Dallas Casey and Jeremy Vincent. Casey (2021-2036) played primarily for Sugar Valley in the Ruthlandian Union and registered a 106-97 record, mainly as a reliever. Casey chalked up 206 saves and compiled a 2.82 ERA. Vincent was 175-175 with a 3.30 ERA in his 16 years, most of them with St. John in the RU South Division. Both Casey and Vincent were 38 when they retired.
