Detroit Sinks Mariners for Game 1 Victory
Little did the Seattle fans know but this game was lost as soon as Detroit leadoff batter Brett Butler led off the first with a triple off of Seattle’s Bruce Kison (L, 0-1). The Tigers scored 3 quick runs in the first and never looked back blasting 5 Seattle pitchers for 12 runs on 15 hits and 5 walks for a 12-3 win. Brett Butler had 2 triples among his 3 hits and scored 4 runs to lead Detroit. Harold Baines and Ben Ogilvie pitched in with a homer each and Alan Trammel added 3 hits and 2 RBI’s. Seattle’s Kison got bounced in the 4th inning and was charged with 6 runs on 9 hits in earning the loss. Detroit’s Bob Sykes (W, 1-0) earned the complete game win giving up 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 2 batters.
