Ruthlandian Union Elite 8 Series

BAKER STUMPS DEFENDERS 4-2 IN GAME 2
Most baseball experts say good pitching beats good bats... I'm sure most Cold Creek fans would agree with that... yesterday in the opener J. J. Gillespie stopped Fort Benton 4-1... Cold Creek 20-game winner Joey Baker did it today stumping Fort Benton 4-2 in the second game of the Ruthlandian Union Elite 8 Series to enable the favored Catamounts to go up 2-0 in the best-of-seven series... Baker (1.0) went the distance permitted only 2 runs on 7 hits, struck out 6 and walked only one... he outpitched Jordy Raeburn, who also won 20 games this season and also hurled a complete game... but Raeburn didn't fare as well... he allowed 4 runs on 8 hits in defeat.

3B Pat Ellis (.429) paced the Catamounts at the plate with 2-3 and 3 RBIs... Ellis singled in a run in the last of the third and slammed a 2-run homer in the fifth... Rod Myerson (.500) batted in the first Fort Benton run in the top of the second with a single... and SS D. D. Badeaux (.375) hit a solo homer in the eighth.

A change of scenery might be good for the Defenders... they will host the third game of the series at Old Fortress Park in Fort Benton.

NASH THROTTLES SPORTS 4-1 IN SECOND GAME
22-year-old Waleska right-hander Craig Nash was on top of his game as he throttled the LaGrange Sports 4-1 on a 7-hitter in game two of the RU Elite 8 Series... the win gave the Westerners a 2-0 lead in the series... Nash, a 20-game winner in the regular season, fired 9 strikeouts and walked just one in going the route... losing pitcher Mike York, a 21-game winner, was touched for 4 runs and 9 hits in 7 and two-thirds innings.

Waleska had a 10-7 advantage in hits and were led by LF Frenchy LeBoeuf (.750), who had 3 hits for the second straight day... 2B Joey Harris (.500) and 3B Mac McMurtry (.429) drilled a pair of hits each... LaGrange's 3B Claude DesJardins (.375) led them with a couple of hits.

The series will now head to Sports Stadium in LaGrange for game three.

Tycobbian Union Elite 8 Series

HAWKS JOLT MONTIES 9-3 IN 10
The defending Pro Cup titllist North Hills Hawks erupted for 6 runs in the top of the tenth to send San Alejo down to defeat 9-3 for the second day in a row at the Casa de Beisbol... the Hawks have taken the first two games on the road... game three will be in North Hills tomorrow afternoon.

North Hills' starter David Michael shut out the Montaneros over the first six frames 3-0... but they rallied in the late innings to send the game into overtime... the extra inning belonged totally to the Hawks as they hammered loser Glen Porterfield for 6 runs, sending him down to another loss... Porterfield also lost the opener in extra innings... Porterfield was his own worst enemy with four walks... the Hawks got only 2 hits in the big inning... the big blows came on 2-run doubles by CF Kris Anastas (.300) and pinchhitter Ronnie Guillaume.

David Michael (.333) put North Hills ahead 3-0 when he cleared the bases with a double in the second frame... Michael (1-0) pitched well and logged the win, yielding 3 runs - only one earned - and 6 hits in his 9 innings... reliever Joey Santini saved it for him with a scoreless tenth... Luis Olmedo pitched well except for the second inning... worked 7 frames and gave up 3 runs on 6 hits in a no-decision.

The Hawks collected 9 hits in the game, while the Monties came up with 8... they were paced by LF Walt King (.500) with a homer and a single... RF Charlie Wilberforce (.400) and 3B Bubby Blackwell (.500) also had 2 hits each.

LA CLAIRE DOES IT AGAIN, TOPS TUCKS IN GAME 2, TOO
After two games in Tuckanarra, underdog La Claire has surprised top-ranked Tucknanarra by winning both games at Central Park Stadium... in game two of the TU Elite 8 Seirs the Lynx ripped Tucks' pitching for a dozen hits en route to a 7-4 triumph, aided by roundtrippers from Kris Wilson and Rog Clemens.

The Lynx handled Tuckanarra starter and 21-game winner Junior Bristow (0-1) with ease, rapping him for 7 runs and 11 hits in his 8 and two-thirds innings... they tied the scored at 3-3 on Clemens' (.500) 2-run shot in the sixth... then took a 5-3 advantage in the seventh on an RBI double by Ron Conklin and a wild pitch that plated Conklin... and they wrapped it up with two more in in the ninth on RBI base hits by Conklin (.222) and Billy Holland (.250).

C Weldon Waller (.571) sparked the winners with 3 hits... Conklin and Clemens also chipped in with a pair each... CF Pancho Villa (.250) and 2B Josh George (.125) led the Blue Jays with homers.

19-game winner Tony Rossi (1-0) picked up the victory... he tossed 7 and one-third innings, allowed 4 runs on 6 hits, fanned 4 and walked 3... he got good relief from Terry Baird, who got the last two outs in the eighth, and from Sven Bendixen, who notched the save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Game three of the best-of-seven series is set for La Claire tomorrow afternoon.
