Yes, the other abilities matter too. Personally I try to get the best ratings I can get across all the catching categories without sacrificing too much offense. But if I have a good enough lineup to support a weaker hitting catcher who can bat at the bottom of the lineup but be an outstanding defensive asset and handler of the pitching staff, I'll go with it.

Your pitchers play a role too. If their control is bad, even a decent catcher may have difficulty avoiding wild pitches. And if you're pitching around a batter, I would assume that this increases the chances of a wild pitch or passed ball as well, though it's a very acceptable risk against good hitters if your pitches are at least above average in control.
