2037 IPA PRO CUP FINALS
WALESKA TAKES LEAD, EDGES SAN ALEJO 3-2
After trailing 2-1 after six innings, Waleska came to life in the late stages of game five to nudge by San Alejo 3-2 at Westerner Field to give them a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven IPA Pro Cup Series... pinchhitter Pat Jancke (.667) doubled across Bobby Denton in the ninth for the game-winner... Craig Nash was excellent on the hill, holding the Monties to 2 runs and 7 hits in his 8 innings... he didn't get the victory... that went to reliever Vern Bass, who sat down the Montaneros in order in the ninth... San Alejo starter Lupe Olmedo held his own, but struggled late... Olmedo stopped the Westerners on 2 runs and 9 hits in 8 innings... it was 2-2 when he exited... Benny Buckmaster (1-2/5.68) went to the mound in the ninth and suffered the loss.
Pacing the Waleska 11-hit attack were LF Frenchy Leboeuf (.394) with 3-for-4 in the game... RF Niles Gregory (.195) added 2 hits... San Alejo top bats were 2B Derek Kristensen (.258) and C Filipe Zamora (.325) with a couple of hits each... the Montaneros only got 7 hits.
The Westerners snapped a scoreless tie in the fourth on an RBI single by C Rodney Hanson (.343)... the Monties bounced back with 2 in the sixth on Zamora's base hit and a sacrifice fly by CF Dusty Rogan (.213)... Waleska evened the score at 2-all in the seventh on a walk to SS Bobby Denton (.361), who came around to score on 2 wild pitches.
Zamora got his 21st postseason RBI and is now within one of tying Red Bluff's Tony Blundell, who holds the IPA Pro Cup record... he drove in 22 runs in 2004.
Waleska will try to capture its second Pro Cup in game six at the Casa de Beisbol in San Alejo tomorrow afternoon... the Westerners whipped Tuckanarra in a great seven-game series in 2028.
