1983 - April Summary
We started out on fire winning our first 8 games before cooling off some to finish the month with a 17-7 record, good enough for a 4 game lead at the end of April. The offense ranks 1 or 2 in all major categories except we’re 12th in accepting walks – we’re getting our hacks!!! The offense is led by Greg Walker (.315, 9 HR’s, 23 RBI’s), Andre Thornton (.333, 7 HR’s, 19 RBI’s), and Paul Molitor (.341, 1 HR, 7 RBI’s) who are all over the Top 5 leaderboard in the AL. The pitching staff is doing wonderful as well with a team ERA of 3.06. I’m most proud of our staff leading the AL in most strikeouts and fewest walks with a ratio of almost 4 to 1! Don Gullet has started strong going 4-1 with a 2.13 ERA in his 5 starts. Also doing well are Bob Hooton (3-1, 3.75) and Floyd Bannister (1-1, 3.51). Rookie Dennis Rasmussen has filled in well with a 2-0 record and a 2.82 ERA in 3 starts since he came up to fill Bruce Kison’s spot in the rotation. Closer Tom Gorman leads the AL with 7 saves.
Here are the standings after the first month of the season.
