2017 First Year Players Draft
June 6th, 2017

Round 1 - The Rockies chose with their first pick in the draft 19 year old SP Willie "Barnyard" Calhoun out of Oakbrook, NY. He is an interesting prospect as he projects as a fairly good pitcher who went 11-0 with a 0.90 ERA in his last season but also played 1B when he wasn't pitching and hit .524/.561/.1029 with 13 HR and 47 RBI. He looks to be more effective as a pitcher but could also project to be a fielder with great power, the only thing keeping him from playing 1B is his batting eye needs some work and his running is very poor. It is possible the Rockies could see how he does in the minors as a pitcher and switch him to 1B if he doesn't pan out.
Round 2 - Closer Roman Garcia is 20 years old out Coastal Carolina University. He went 7-1 with a 2.31 ERA last season. He has all the traits the Rockies could want with a high work ethic and good leader ability. He also has shown to be extremely intelligent and chose baseball instead of possibly making his millions in the private business sector.
Round 3 - SS Anastasio Cortez is 24 years old out of Wichita State University. He is a great fielder with a mediocre bat. He will need to use his good work ethic in the minors as at his age he won't have long to make an impression and work his way to the bigs.
Round 4 - The Rockies chose Catcher Rob Adams with their 4th pick. He is out of William & Mary College in Williamsburg, VA and hit .301/.342/.402 with 6 HR and 58 RBI this season
Round 5 - The last pick we will preview was 21 year old SP Carlos Peterson out of Cal-State Fullerton. He was 5-2 with a 3.18 ERA and could develop into a back of rotation starter or a good bullpen arm.
