Mid-Offseason Update
January 1st, 2018

The biggest news of the offseason for the Rockies was the decision to not resign OF Carlos Gonzalez. In the end Gonzalez signed with the division rival Los Angeles Dodgers. We know the Rockies were strongly leaning towards resigning Gonzalez until Major League Baseball came out with a rule change that really effected the decision. The commissioner's office announced on November 1st that teams will now only be able to carry 24 players on their active roster meaning 1 less player available to teams and with a stable of good young outfielder's the Rockies decided to go with youth and use the money saved to extend other players.
Extensions - The Rockies extended multiple players this season instead of going through arbitration.
- SP Jose Fernandez signed a 4 year extension worth $33,500,000 over its life.
- 2B Marco Hernandez signed a 4 year extenstion worth $28,760,000 over its life
- RP Thomas Keeling signed a 5 year deal worth $8,310,000
Arbitration- The Rockies did not offer RF Corey Dickerson arbitration
- CF Jose Soto was awarded a contract worth $6,000,000
- RP Chris Withrow was awarded a contract for $2,500,000
- SP Drew Pomeranz was awarded a contract for $7,500,000
Free Agents- To this point the Rockies have only signed one free agent, signing international free agent 23 year old RP Yakamochi Ishida to a 4 year deal worth $750,000 per season. It's a incredible steal for the Rockies as many scouts saw him having great potential as a closer.
The Rockies also completed one trade that sent 3B Wilmer Flores to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for RP Robert Carson. Last season for the Cardinal Carson pitched 110 innings with a 2.85 ERA.
