2018 First Year Players Draft
June 6th, 2018
Round 1 - The Colorado Rockies first round pick could turn out to be a steal at the end of the 1st round as they chose 20 year old CF Rick Clark from Georgia Tech University. Clark is an extremely fast outfielder who can play all the outfield positions with a cannon of an arm. He project to fill out still and become a power hitting left fielder most likely. This season in 39 games he hit .291/.421/.639 with 14 HR and 40 RBI. He also had 38 stolen bases and looks to have a good eye as he had more walks then strikeouts.
Round 2 - The Rockies second pick of the day was 19 year old SP Pay Kubitza. This was an interesting pick in the second round as the kid may have been picked for his intangibles. He is not a bad pitcher but his pitches don't have a whole lot of movement on them but he is known to have a very high work ethic and pitched well this season going 11-0 with a 0.62 ERA and an incredible 244 strikeouts to 25 walks.
Round 3 - 20 year old RP Rick Walker out of Cal State-Fullerton was the Rockies 3rd pick. He surprisingly fell to the 3rd round where the Rockies stole him from everyone else. He may have fallen due to a mediocre season with a 3.21 ERA. If he works hard and develops he could develop into a great setup man.
Round 4 - The Rockies used their 4th round pick on 18 year old CF Bob Miller out of St. Joseph High School in New Jersey. Miller is another versatile outfielder with good speed. In 22 games this season he hit .474/.536/.856 with 6 HR 34 RBI and an impressive 30 Stolen Bases. The kid plays the game hard and works just as hard.
Round 5 - The final pick we will preview was 18 year old 3B Bob Tiefenthaler from Maryland. This was strictly an intangibles pick as he may be lucky to make it to the majors but the Rockies hope to have drafted a diamond in the rough. The one things he has going for him is all of his intangibles whether it be leadership, intelligence, work ethic were off the charts.
